Damage to roadside Hedge.

I had a van run into a hedge early one morning taking several fencing stakes out & ripping the hedge out.

I have the number plate for the Van & have been given a name of the owner, but no contact details, how do I go about claiming it on his insurance?

closish neighbour, got fed up with cars failing to navigate a bend, and smashing the fence up, car duly did, thought ,' I will have the b''' this time', removed tax disc, police turned up, duly cautioned him, 'for removing the tax disc from car', apparently illegal, made him give it back, or would have arrested him. Stupid or what, could only get details to claim on a few, not all, cars through hedge.

You can go on the insurers database, cost about £5. You will get the name of the van`s insurer & a policy number. Saves involving your own insurance, who if they can not find the owner will put it down as a claim against your policy

Thank you, checked and the Van was uninsured.

If the van owner has assets (and a fixed abode) you can raise a civil action. You can do small claims on line. Probably accounts for plods reaction. I imagine driving through a hedge is "civi" while removing a tax disc is "criminal". Plod trying to collect brownie points for another conviction, policing has nothing much to do with keeping the peace and protecting life and property any more.

I have had this problem a few times. My solution is to pick up the car, if still in the field. And move it to a place for safe keeping. Because it will be leaking diesel ,oil and battery acid also broken glass. A lot easier to get the insurance details when you get the phone calls from the recovery man.

The cars have been on their sides or roof so difficult to damage them any more. And more importantly I don't want my field damaging with oil or debris.

Isn't there an uninsured drivers fund run by the insurance industry to pay out in these sort of circumstances?

Edit: there is, its called the MIB (Motor Insurance Bureau).

A bit of googling suggest that its rules were changed a few years ago and property damage claims can now be made to it as well as just road accidents.

great idea, but remember, if you damage it, you are liable.

Yup and hence the reason no one gets a pull or a tow out here. Had someone claim the damage to their car was us towing them out at their request not the fact they went though the hedge. Ruined it for everyone so now everyone stay where they are till we have the details and a proper recovery truck arrives.
