So IF it stays dry over the weekend thinking about a last attempt at wheat
Options are
Sumo DTS ?
or
CO with Metcalfe points
Feel like dts might be more rain tolerant if we get another load
But have starter fert option with co
Just thinking a poor wheat might still create a better margin than spring barley?

I planted some Crusoe the other night.
I refuse to buy spring seeds at current prices, even if there were some available.
Got Skyfall left to plant, will risk it , probably tomorrow.
It's not pretty though.
But then nothing has been this season really.

Why last attempt? have you seen the latest safe sowing dates on the recommended list? In the northern part of the country my opinion is that these dates can be pushed a little? We haven't really had much of a winter yet.

The danger is we don't get a winter and no vernalisation.

He's in North Yorkshire, I'm sure we'll get frost in March/April/May we always do.

I think they are very cautious with the latest sowing dates as it depends on the weather after.
Skyfall (I was told mid March "off the record" as it has spring wheat in the breeding) is safe until much later than Crusoe.

How did it go ? the Co will be a better choice than the Sumo if its wet I reckon

We are "just" about at a point where it "might" just about be dry enough for us to go and try a bit more with our C0 over the next few days

Considering just mauling some graham into some fields of failed Osr.... got the seed here, so it may as well go in...

Can't see spring crops doing much of a financial return this year,

Problem is, my 'big' tractor is at the dealership for some repairs, so it'll be up to the '130' !! It's a big ask on what is for us, heavy ground !

The weather is being cruel! It keeps teasing a window of opportunity then snatches it away.. The promised heavy rain for this morning hasn't arrived, yet... oh if only we could just keep dodging it for the next week.... it is starting to get darker though...

Trouble is, sp. barley is going to be so overdone, and sp. Osr is looking like too much of a risk ...

Considering leaving fallow or possibly trying lucerne .. ??

The results of stuff mauled in around here in November are starting to show. On dryer patches of field there is a crop, but there are lots of bare or thin patches. Most headlands are a write off.
Most of those that did maul some in are saying that they wish that they hadn't bothered.
At this time of years patience usually pays.

I had hoped for the best for this weeks drilling but it is taking a pasting from the rain today. Its not going to do it any good!

What is the soil type? The last thing you want to do is smear a slot with the DTS tine by going deep though it would give you a bit of drainage. Keep the tine an inch deeper than the seed if you must.
