hi, does anyone know the hydraulics on the DB 880, friend of mine has acquired one of these machines, the problem is the 3 pt. linkage arms don't go down it has a front loader which works he as tried pushing& pulling every leaver with no result, I have had a couple of earlier fords i.e. 3000 & dexta these tractors have a button that you push in or pull out which allows the front loader or back linkage to operate depending which you are using has the db 880 got something like this or a lever which does the same thing, there is a lever to the left of the drivers seat that seams to go to the left/middle or right (3 settings) what does this do??, is it anything to do with the problem??, any help with this that I can pass to him will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The selector lever you talk about on the side is called the three way valve. This from memory needs to be all the way towards the seat to make the rear links work. There is also on the left hand side as you stand behind the tractor a linkage lock, lift the arms as high as possible, and turn it. It will go in and out. Out is unlocked.

If it has not been used for years and the linkage lock is engaged it is probably siezed. Be careful trying to shift it, as the lever easily breaks if force is used. The linkage lock must only ever be disengaged if the linkage is at the top. If there is no weight on the links when the lock is free you will be able to diengage it by lifting the links to the top by hand and then turning the lock with the. Other.
Other questions, does the linkage move at all when the quadrant lever is pulled right back?
Has the tractor got a 3 way valve chest, which sits behind the drivers left heel?
This can be of 2 types, the early ones had 3 knobs which you have to open or close depending which service you want, linkage, trailer tip, or loader. The later, a 4 position lever. These were linkage, loader, trailer or trailer and linkage. Not nessesarily in that order. If this is not in the linkage position oil in the ram will stop the linkage lowering.
The other lever to the rear of the quadraant on the right is to choose between draught , height or TCU / spool type work / constant pumping. Only ever turn this lever if the quadrant lever is pulled right back.

Here's the 4 way valve, if the transfer is missing(likely) the positions should be stamped in front of the lever L-L1-1-2 L is for the rear links, L1 is for the rear links and when using an assist ram , 1 is for the port which has the hydraulic fitting shown in the picture, 2 is for the port below which has the plug in it. The loader hydraulic pressure pipe should be plumbed in to port 1, unless spool valves have been fitted to the tractor, although unlikely on that model, the trailer tipping pipe in to port 2.

My 880 A (1968) has an L8 loader. It has had another valve welded onto the right hand side....can anyone tell me why this would have been added? If anyone can explain the 3 way valve lever - there is no decal and no stamped indicators?

Right this is a later selectamatic tractor .
It has the 3 way hydraulic valve plainly showing to the left side and below the seat.
This will send oil either to the Linkage , trailer coupling, or loader or combination linkage and trailer.

If my memory is correct that lever needs to be towards the centre of the tractor to operate the rear links.
Put to the far left should work the loader.
There is a 3 way selectamatic control behind the main quadrant. With the main quadrant lever pulled fully back, you can alter this to go into either draft control, hieght control or TCU / constant pumping.
This position is the correct place for operating the loader.
The quadrant lever should have a hook to latch itback in this position for loader work.
To release the linkage you need to bring the 3 way valve across to the linkage position, then pull the quadrant lever right back. This should raise the linkage slightly removing pressure on the locking mechanism to enable that to be unlocked.
The loader control spool has been added to make operation of the loader easier than using the quadrant lever, it may also have a second spool for hydraulic attachment, and crowding and emptying the bucket
Hope this is clear. Howeverit may be that you have no oil being pumped at all in which case the problem is far more complex

Have a very close look at the three way valve in front of the lever on the flat top there should be the settings stamped in, although these usually get worn away or covered in paint which makes them hard to read, there is a sticker to fit over the top, tractor club or somone like Barclay Williams might still supply this. Yours has obviously been repainted at some point so you might have to scrape the paint away. I've a feeling your loader could have come from an earlier tractor, I seem to think yours would have an LF8 if fitted from new.

Found this online - it appears loaders were either L8 or LS8 (the super loader has the ram for emptying/ changing the position of the bucket) - note doc is dated 1971.
