Trailer brakes you could apply from the tractor dateslong before the 1390 ! Not that everybody had them of course. ;)
Not sure that using trailer brakes that don't work with the tractors brake pedal is strictly legal IE spool valve.. my point was only that in my experience 5 tonne behind a 1394 doing a maximum of 18 mph was safe if the driver was competent no offence meant to classichay

None taken I’ve had my run in with an Unbraked bale trailer on a xl series case which led to trailer brakes being fitted to that! Would Barclay Williams have such a valve ? You respect bends and gradients a hell of a lot More when you have had 9t of trailer shunt you down a bank with all four wheels locked. Even with brakes fitted on new tractors I just assume they could fail leaving you in a big mess quick.

Barclay Williams would be a good start otherwise try breakers. . SJ Briggs had one on eBay a bit back think it made about £300 but think they're pretty rare

I have an adaptor for trailer brakes so I can work them off the tipping pipe on the 996. I rarely touch the brake pedal, the trailer stops everything.
A genuine trailer brake valve will be rare but like everything one will turn up eventually. If you're on Facebook there are a few David Brown groups that have plenty of valuable information and knowledgeable members.

I’ll keep an eye out need to go to Barclay Williams for some parts I’ll ask them, doubtful it will tow anything heavy but with it having drum brakes I’m mindful after knowing how haphazard these can be on owning a few key leylands over the years.
