Ive got a confession...i have sinned...

The 15 needs a new exhaust, having blown the baffles out of her previous one, its now got that thin that the side of the silencer box is no longer patchable

It seems than a genuine exhaust to fit a 7810 can be procured at half the price of an inferior copy of the original 1594 item, so i have purchased said 7810 silencer, taken a grinder to it, and will weld the base fitting of my 1594 box to it. I need to remove the ford bent elbow at the top, and extend the top pipe to a height more befitting to the 15, the original ford elbow not being long enough

pictures to follow when completed

when i get done with this silencer box it will look nothing like the 7810 exhuast i picked up at 5pm today....

it was £40 cheaper than the one whats supposed to fit a 15 but looks nothing like the original

i just hope the exhaust doesnt jinx it and turn it into a gutless numb sounding stiff geared lump of iron....

Well John I'm shocked, stunned and not a little amazed ;)
Out of interest the,as I recall the 78 had a unique exhaust as the 7610 version caused too much back pressure

Do you think the jinx will extend to doubling it's market value

no fear of that not with the superior part you are about to fit. Why not leave the curved top bit on it would look quite smart I would have thought.

Or why not go the whole hog and get a stainless straight pipe. go on deafen yourself.

funny you say that, on inspection this one has a cross slot cut into the baffle, presumably to lower back pressure? its advertised as fitting from a 76 up to an 82, at £54 quid il take a gamble on it

ive tried the straight pipe option....thats a no go believe me, as much as i would have liked it to work. Maybe if it was a standard factory spec engine it would go, but not on this one

Yes the 76 and 78 exhausts were different. Our 78 turbo was further modified by having some bolts screwed into the exhaust rather than a straight pipe. I assume this was to meddle with the baffles and improve gas flow.

why not performance or noise issues?

Noise....plus that while the heads were off for the rebuild, my friend who normally spends his time fettling ford pinto race engines took a die grinder and flap wheel to the valve ports and gave her a "little" bit more flow

i tried a straight pipe on it years ago, it sounds more like the engine in a spitfire fighter when it was at full chat...and i couldnt hear that rather soft spreaking woman on radio 4, what ever her name is...
