Put the control valve back in today with the missing spring and ball bearing and when I first started it up the linkage lifted but only lowered on switching off but after switching back on it wont lift at all, even the loader doesn't work any more. Any suggestions

Something is wrong with your control valve, difficult thing for an amateur to sort out though. If item 4 on the diagram gets blocked, and it's only a very small hole, then it can cause havoc.

Replaceable parts have a number, those without number will only fit that control valve, i.e. machined to fit that valve only.

Further thinking, bear in mind it's over 20 years since I've been near one now, where the cable tie is, there should be items 42/43 fitted pushing against pipe item 41 on the diagram below, if it's not then you'll have lost pressure from the pump.

Was bugging me what should be there, I couldn't find it in the parts catalogue and would need to take a wheel off our 996 to get a look in there because of the low profile cab.

Netherfield, on the link you've posted they are the bits I'm missing but do you know where I could get a hold of the bits because that link doesn't have any dealers within 500 miles of me so wont let me buy.

You're looking at https://www.barcleywilliams.co.uk/ or http://clitheroe-engineering.co.uk/home/about or another tractor breaker I would think. I'm not sure if Case dealers will have or be able to get such parts now.

Near to you, try https://www.jeremyfearn.co.uk/

The part is not unique to your model and would be a part from most models from around 1968 onwards, or when they started painting them white anyway.

How much oil should I put in when I change the hydraulic filter, the same amount as comes out or the full 24quarts that's recommended to totally refill according to the workshop manual. How accurate is the little round window under the left side near the cab step?

The window is accurate as long as the tractor is on a fairly level surface, you must drop the loader to get the oil out of the rams, and then after filling some oil back in lift the loader up to the top before checking the sight gauge.
