DD on livestock farm

Quite a few are strip grazing it with cattle and/or sheep now, following the lead of our NZ comrades. Over there they have been doing lots of research and trials into utilising it as a grazing crop, and the uptake has been quite spectacular in the last decade or so.

In the UK it is the latest, fashionable crop to grow for winter grazing, but it certainly isn't without it's issues. Thankfully the Kiwi's are a great source of info in overcoming those issues.

When I grew some as a trial it rotted by November. Never sure why

How are you getting on with the amount of grass coming back?

I take it the glyphosate didn’t quite work.

I waited to put a foliar feed of boron,TE supplement and a dose of Falcon to try to eliminate the grass coming back in ours.

Bottom half of the field I have done suffered with a combination of some flea beetle damage, slug infestation and some poor patches which came not so well.

Are you going to go on with a foliar boron to prevent the swedes rotting?
Field was sprayed with glyphosate and all went brown but some grass has regrown. Not all over just patches. Got contractor to spray so should have been right.
Will grass harm crop too much. I am going to ring agronomist this week about boron. Is there still an option to take it out.
Had some flea beetle and I sprayed it once. Maybe should have put some slug pellets on as odd patches seem affected. Pleased with them overall. Still learning.

Looks like your swedes have had a good start and should out compete the grass which is coming back.

I‘ve got about half of the field where the swedes were maybe pressured by slugs and were a bit thin so that’s why I put the falcon on to give them a better chance.

Chatting with our old DD contractor and he said one agronomist reckoned the Falcon was too variable in killing the grass so didn’t really recommend it however it’s always done a good job when we’ve used it.

Id say definitely take your agronomists advice on boron and don’t panic about driving through the crop,it soon fills the wheelmarks.

Make sure your sprayer is clean and has no residue likely to affect the swedes or worst case scenario kill them.

i wouldn’t worry about the grass tbh, as your swedes look so thick the canopy will stifle the grass now, but it will keep it cleaner when grazing.

Lots of trace element sprays containing boron are available, most of them relatively cheap. I like to apply my Boron in a spray with a bit of foliar nitrogen and potash in it too. Always seems to pep it up a bit.

got a beet bucket here Dave that came from Alf on here, best £700 spent. Gives plenty options and when the pressures on in spring to get SB sown just go in and lift the last bit of swedes or FB and introduce it at grass. Can soon lift a trailer load and clear a field.
Whats the harvester like? Like a neep lifter?

Or is it just a neep with a neep docker? :p

it’s just a riddle bucket for front of the forklift. Drive along, scoop them out, give it a shake out, load and repeat. FB harvesting wasn’t cheap getting the pros in. Perfect for scattering on to pasture early spring and even comes in handy on the pit scattering grass 😉

These are my DD Swedes. Drilled 22nd June, sprayed off the grass as soon as the drill left the field.

One spray of falcon and boron last week.

Wow! Cracking looking crop there...
OK,time to fess up....

Top half of the field has come well but patches where there are springs lower are a bit thin and especially a small banks area of about half an acre which failed.

Couple of weeks ago I span on some slug pellets as they seemed to be getting the upper hand and whilst I’d got the spinner on the quad I span 3kg ish of forage rape on the thin and failed bits.

Just span on and not touched and they seem to be coming well.
