Some people truly have gone mad. Wanting to apply for rights for a foreign husband on the strength of his relationship to you, even though you refuse to hold the identity of the country you were born and reared in. Seriously?

Anyone else hear Stephen Farry talking about the case on Radio Ulster earlier? He wants the British and Irish governments to sit down and work through the issues over identity that have arisen over the last 20 years, it's not like they've got anything more important on at the moment!. He also states that citizenship follows on from identity and he identifies as Northern Irish first and European second, neither of which are options under the agreement. In a typical Alliance hint to equality he said that if there was ever a United Ireland, a child born to Unionist parents should be allowed British rather than Irish citizenship if the parents wish. Yet again the Alliance party is determined to create more problems than they'll ever solve.

I must be too tired, I read that as Stephen Fry at first, and was wondering what the hell he was sticking his nose into all this for... :banghead:

Part of the issue seems to be that the Belfast Agreement talks about the right to "identify" as British or Irish or both, and for both governments to respect that. No specific mention of citizenship or the conferring of etc is mentioned in the agreement.

Exactly, the people in question can't understand the difference between identity and citizenship. Any sensible person in a normal country would renounce the citizenship they don't want and apply for the citizenship they do want but no this is Northern Ireland so you have to create a scene, waste money, get politicians involved who should know by now to stay away from these sorts of things and create more problems for the future.

Quite a poor quality scene, I don't think many people notice.
