I always feel like an outsider looking in... that's why I enjoy the forums so much, I AM AN OUTSIDER LOOKING IN!!

For me, it's learned behaviour, not really detrimental because I see how it came about - my parents were 40 when I was born, and so I had the benefit of a more mature value/belief system than most of my peers did.

So, I don't worry too much about it, my family know that if there are more than 10 people at a function then I will make my excuses .

As with the calling yourself bad names, it can only you feel bad if you consent to it..
Mistakes are just opportunities to learn something.

Don't be scared to ditch friends you cannot afford to have in your life.

If they are enough of a friend, they'll figure out the WHY and sort out their behaviour...

Easy to say from here, but don't let these challenges derail your train-trip to stardom, Buffy!

And, I hope your grandmother has a speedy recovery, strokes are nasty but time to hospital is critical.

@waterbuffalofarmer , I keep thinking back to your ship analogy and that it won't sink if it doesn't take in water. That gave me some inspiration this week so thanks for that. And like the ship in a heavy sea we might drop down in amongst the waves for a bit but sooner or later we will come back up again. Best wishes.
You're most welcome :) glad it helped. TC yaself now x

Doc; your analogy of the ship caught between waves is pretty good!

I have an older brother who served with the Royal Navy and was based in South Africa for three or so years way back in the fifties. He served on the HMS Bermuda and once told me of the day the ship was manoeuvring in rough water just off the coast and she was caught in a trough between two waves and the sea closed over her. At the time, he and all the others actually thought that the ship had hit the seabed as she dropped. Interestingly, some time later, there appeared a photograph in the South African press that showed only some rigging above the sea and giving the appearance that the Bermuda had been sunk. Had anyone been on the decks at the time of the incident they would have been lost.

The Daily Mail isn't perhaps the country's favourite read but it does from time to time print some interesting articles and also does some good work for worthy causes. Saturday's copy of the Saturday Mail carried an article by James Middleton (yes that James Middleton) describing his battles with mental illness and I score it as well worth reading. James took no payment for the article and insisted that any monies be donated to 'Pets as therapy' and 'Heads Together'.

Way back when I hit my lowest low I thought that wealth, better education, position, and a host of other things could perhaps have saved me from that decent into the deepest depression that you would have trouble imagining. But during those times I met the well educated, the well off, and people of standing, who were all in a similar boat to my self.

Depression / mental illness, somewhat like the plague, is not selective and it infects it's victims amongst the young, the old, the rich, the poor, the sick and the well, and differentiates not between male and female.

Or is it 'perhaps' selective and there are only certain ones amongst us who will be susceptible to it's bite? Could much of it be down to body chemistry, diet, and perhaps thought patterns / emotions?

The essential thing to know is that there is a way through and it is survivable. In the storms of life it is it is helpful to have an anchor but when the poop really hits the fan lets not forget that there are those that will answer our cries for help and support us in our hours of need.

Stay safe, stay well, and don't ever be too afraid, or embarrassed, to ask for help.

Chris :)

That is spot on Chris. I find for myself that to put me in depressive States it's usually due to negative thinking, feeling inferior is a big issue which I'm trying to overcome. I'm sure it is for a lot of others too and to anyone who feels that way I just want to say that you're not inferior in any way, each person is equally as important as the next ;) Depression I often heard was accumulative of rich people, mostly, although more common nowadays in everyone (if accumulative is the correct word....) Having something to keep the mind occupied is a good thing, reading I find helps me. Talking helps a huge amount. There are times that I like my own company, but even that gets tiresome after a while. I have been wondering whether coming from a large family can also have a big factor in depression... As you grow apart from your siblings there becomes less contact between you, whether it's a "good morning" or "how was your day?" Even. Having lots of friends and then all of them slowly drifting away and not wanting to talk that much with you can also be another factor in depression. My advice to anyone, and I'm still trying my utmost to follow this myself, is to take everyday as it comes, keep breathing and although it will take a long time you will get to a better place. I'm not saying do that and nothing else, small changes overtime make a huge difference, or can, in your mental health. Whether it be diet, exercise, new friends, something that gives you a sense of worth, something you are good at or you find you're good at it. Don't be afraid to try new things ;) sorry for long post. Stay safe people's :D

Well, it seems that my grandmother may not make it out of hospital, she seems to have gotten a bit better but she now has a chest infection :( family think that she won't make it. I want to see her and not too. My brothers are gonna go up and see her and I'm going to stay on the farm and manage stuff with my dad. I have a very difficult relationship with my grandparents and I haven't seen them in over 8 months. I keep thinking whether it would be best to see her before she dies, but at same time it would only make things worse and I never talk to my granddad anymore so that would be difficult too. I hope she goes peacefully and in not so much pain, for her sake. Sorry for going on guys, I felt I had to put this somewhere, I don't want to hassle my mates as they can do without my crap.
