Post-viral fatigue is in the news at the moment, as it can be an unhappy consequence of having even a mild dose of covid-19. In some instances, PVF can lead to depression.

This video was posted by MD, the medical matters columnist in Private Eye (Issue No. 1526 17 July - 30 July), and gives a kind and informed guide to coping with it. He should be on prescription, imv.

Anyone who feels they are struggling with post viral fatigue/chronic fatigue syndrome/me would do well to read the information on the ME Association web pages. Several years ago, a multi million pound trial was conducted, published and the results pushed through doctors to people presenting with symptoms. The results basically said that you should exercise and "push" your way through the pain etc. Unfortunately (criminally), the trials had been set up to prove this based on the preconceived ideas of the designing doctors. This was later established in a full review of the work, not however before it had really ruined many lives.

You need to become a "spoony", this won't mean not being able to regain full fitness infact for pvf it will make it much more likely and help avoid becoming depressed.

End of lecture.

Absolutely. This is what MD - who works in the field - seeks to correct.

I listened to the latest BBC Inside Science podcast yesterday while turning hay. They did a big piece on fraud in peer reviewed studies. It's estimated that 10 to 20% of them include some element of fraud (falsification of results, not just minor errors). Many are medical ones.

The biggest example was Andrew Wakefield's study "showing" MMR vaccine caused autism. He only had 12 patients and, on full investigation, they all either had autism well before taking the vaccine or it came on long after. He had altered their medical records to suit his hypothesis. The peer reviewers didn't pick it up.

They also talked about the huge number of industry funded trials which are stopped early and never published because the emerging results don't suit the sponsor.

Sorry, I'm not trying to make any of you more depressed, just saying be careful what "evidence" you follow.

I heard that when it went out. I think it's just good to be aware when any treatment is offered.

Apart from all the people who were made so much worse by being put through the "no pain, no gain" regime to cure their ME, the sad thing about the ME story is that it cost a bomb and that is basically it in terms of government funded research.

Despite the whole country under going more stress than many of our ancestors did our farming communities have been used and abused by profiteering big business over a long period of time and consequently have suffered a higher rate of stress, anger, and suicides than many other sections of UK industry.

In some small way this thread attempts to offer folks the opportunity to share some of their stress and 'perhaps' pick up some pointers to help them find valuable support in their times of need.

The main things to remember are that you are not alone, with help and support one can survive and recover from the deepest and darkest of depressions, and help is often more at hand and closer than folk imagine.

I don't know how it came about but I just stumbled in to FCN and their 'FARMWELL' site and provisionally (to me) it looks to be a very well thought out and planned site; that has a whole lot of support to offer farmers and their families, friends, and neighbors in our rural communities.

I got to wondering how many, if any, of our visitors have actually used the FCN services and found them of help; or have used any other services in their hours of need.

Anyone? Your replies may be just the encouragement that some of our silent reader need just now.

As a forum we were approached by Farm community network sometime ago to provide a link to people that can help

http://www.fcn.org.uk/

We were of course happy to help however we could and there will soon be a click thorough banner direct to their website and advisors (we are just waiting if their committee to approve what we have done before it can go live though)

Forums are a great place for the isolated to ge together, get advice or just talk rubbish if they like. I see forums like TTF playing an important role in the future connecting people who can help each other

Just contemplating Clive's old post and clicked a much belated like. We have all certainly come a long way since that post and have, hopefully, seen a growing trend for people to seek help and support for matters of the mind and heart.

I'm dropping off the radar for a while and trust that you good folk will keep the ball rolling and use all your life and mental knowledge to support others in keeping the black-dog of depression at bay.

Stay safe, stay well, and above all remember that you are never really alone; you may just think that you are.

Failed crops as it's too dry 3 bad years on the trot, 2 broken down tractors which are not even a year old and an on the spot rpa inspection is enough make me want to chuck it all in, I'm usually the positive one looking for all the good things but they are few and far between these days.

I'm sorry you feel like that and that it's sounds like it's starting to overwhelm you. It sounds like you aren't alone in this. Do you both (?) feel the same? That must make it harder.
