Dealing with depression - suicidal thoughts - Join the conversation (including helpline details)

There is a lot of good psychology in the scriptures of most religions and if applied to daily life can help us cope with anger/anxiety/depression but sadly it often appears to be the blind leading the blind when it comes to religious organisations/churches.

Upon rejecting the messengers we must take care not to reject the truths within the messages but perhaps this thread is not the best place for the discussion of such matters.

Yes ...I wasn't very helpful when they were trying to raise money for the food ....I said "why not knock the building down and sell the materials for salvage and build a new 'fit for purpose' building ......the more vocal ones were the ones who did or do absolutely nothing to keep it going !!

I suggested knocking eight of the group parish churches down; reclaiming the stone, lead and slate; building a nice warm hall at one of the remaining ones.

Faces were aghast. But fact is these buildings are not fit for purpose. Eight building plots and the dosh in the bank for good purposes.

When we said the church was shutting, all we heard was grumble grumble. Noone considered actually using the church! Costs close to £3k to keep it open with minimal repairs per year. That's nothing given the income of the local villagers - none who lift a finger to help or pay towards it.

Very few religious faiths are enhanced by money grabbing bureaucracy.

Really not in the best of places right now. In fact, I'm starting to think about a back up plan for my future, only I don't really have one at the moment so I am feeling quite trapped. I honestly don't know what to even investigate, much less pursue. I don't really know what would suit me as a person.

I wouldn’t know what to suggest really other than there is no harm in trying a variety of different things. It’s actually impossible to know in advance how anything is going work out (within reason) so nothing wrong in trying different things out and if they don’t work, well you have learned something and broadened your experience.
If find it’s the same with business decisions. It’s a waste to spend too long pontificating on whether to go ahead. You really can’t predict how things will turn out before you are actually in to the job.

Now is probably a great time to explore, a lot of change going on in the world, and you're bright enough to learn on your feet

sometimes it's good to get out of a thinking job and into one that makes you work, and then out of that into something technical again

speaking as someone who was also "very bright, but just coasts along" life can be really fulfilling if you make it so, it isn't a rehearsal

I've given your post a 'Like' ~ not because I take any pleasure from your current position, but because, conversely, I see where you are as being a launch pad ~ ~ ~ ~

30+ years ago, I likened my life to an arm or a road - I'd travelled down this path and reached a palm with fingers of direction which could lead me ~ Lord knows where. The danger is that we go round and round without making a decision. Is the trick to stand still and do nothing until we make the decision, rather than feeling this compunction, this compelling to 'decide'?

I understand the bit about being 'Trapped' ~ how I do! Snap and that's where I am …….. I'm with you, undecided. Last week I wondered about realising all my modest assets and going out to India and opening an orphanage and specifically for those poor wee mites who are used and abused …….. it's currently on the back-burner!

^ ^ ^ that's just me. Would it be an idea for you to simply sit down, consider all those influences + on one side of the page and - on the other? Would it be an idea to at least attempt to seek out the positives ~ to mean the opportunities?

I need to think about what else I might do. I have experience of business and logistics and I like machinery so I guess that is a starting point. I would like to say I have good people skills and I'm goo with IT. Wonder if I might find some kind of trainee role in construction or something though it depends on what is available locally.
I gather you’ve tried medical stuff etc. Someone I know has got fed up with being on the QCC paperwork for a retirement hone where they were manager. The company didn’t want to pay for training or equipment so the inspections where making this person look lack lustre. They have now become a consultant to help various retirement homes get up to scratch and it’s proving quite profitable as well as much less pressure.

Another guy I know quit gardening to buy and collect insurance wrote off pushbikes and resell the parts…… an insanely profitable little job and stopping a lot of fraud too as many bikes don’t have the cracked frame they’re supposed to.

Warehouse work, distribution, logistics kind of job?
Wouldn’t mind trying something different myself.

It's surprising how many highly qualified and high-end achievers, when deciding upon a spell of time-out and perhaps to regather their thoughts and impetus, take up the roll of Postman. There don't seem to be any collective thought processes ~ it seems to be an individual decision every time. ……..
Strange perhaps, but strangely true! :)

When you were a lad at school, what were your dreams then?

almost a sore point. I remember being quite enthusiastic about my school “careers interview”.
In i go, first question - “what do your parents do?”.
“Mum is a school teacher, dad has an engineering business”
“Oh, you’ll go and work for your dad then. Bye. Next”

awful work by a disinterested twit😡

No, I don't think it would be a thing that really suits me in all honesty.

I think I need to consider something else, some other entirely separate path.

Do you not have an interest/hobby you could cash in on and make into a business? Career?

I got pee'd off working for numptys and doing jobs beyond my pay scale... I set up on my own with more of a hobby in numpty time... they were paying me while I was doing my own thing in their office on their computer.
My then Manager was happy as he was useless. And I helped him as he was gasping for air and sinking fast and he was a likeable old boy caught in a wave of unavoidable sh!t.

Caused me no end of stress/unhappiness to the point of f**k this I'm off on the sick... I tasted proper Sleep.. Going to bed at a proper time getting up at a proper time and allsorts whilst off.

I went back with I won't be doing X Y or Z and I won't be here every other weekend From Friday at midnight.I did them 6 days of daft hours. Que new Manager and it was easier but weren't right...

Que new Big Manager above all little managers..... Que Letter From new Main man saying I wasn't doing what I was paid for and I'd have to make sure XYZ was done and they wouldn't pay me past my hours. He had an email answering his issues with a "Stick it up your arse final sentence" within 10 minutes and I was in the car and gone and I've never looked back
