Now is probably a great time to explore, a lot of change going on in the world, and you're bright enough to learn on your feet

sometimes it's good to get out of a thinking job and into one that makes you work, and then out of that into something technical again

speaking as someone who was also "very bright, but just coasts along" life can be really fulfilling if you make it so, it isn't a rehearsal
It sounds stupid, but I wish I didn't think as much. I'm beginning to think it's not a good trait. Before I go away with a machine I go through every eventuality of what could go wrong. To the point I'm physically sick.

Other people who help us can put them away with not a worry in the world. Highly delighted. A lot to be said for ignorance is bliss.

Remember we had a guy come to help us who was previously manager of a large dairy farm. He was delighted when we put him to pressure wash sheds. Because he didn't have to think.

Do you not have an interest/hobby you could cash in on and make into a business? Career?

I got pee'd off working for numptys and doing jobs beyond my pay scale... I set up on my own with more of a hobby in numpty time... they were paying me while I was doing my own thing in their office on their computer.
My then Manager was happy as he was useless. And I helped him as he was gasping for air and sinking fast and he was a likeable old boy caught in a wave of unavoidable sh!t.

Caused me no end of stress/unhappiness to the point of f**k this I'm off on the sick... I tasted proper Sleep.. Going to bed at a proper time getting up at a proper time and allsorts whilst off.

I went back with I won't be doing X Y or Z and I won't be here every other weekend From Friday at midnight.I did them 6 days of daft hours. Que new Manager and it was easier but weren't right...

Que new Big Manager above all little managers..... Que Letter From new Main man saying I wasn't doing what I was paid for and I'd have to make sure XYZ was done and they wouldn't pay me past my hours. He had an email answering his issues with a "Stick it up your arse final sentence" within 10 minutes and I was in the car and gone and I've never looked back

I don't actually have many hobbies. I've decided I like chainsawing and chopping wood. I really enjoyed driving machinery all summer, too. I quite like the idea of just operating heavy plant but I've not ever so much as sat in anything more than a 15 tonne excavator so the whole thing is alien to me.

I don't even play PC games that much these days. They don't give me the same sense of satisfaction they used to.

I quite like the idea of working in construction with big toys but I've never done any of it and wouldn't know how to even go about finding out about it or who to write to for a job.

My recent story I guess. 6 years ago I was single depressed, in a “good job” Daera testing cattle for br.
I was depressed never used my education bar the degree certificate to pass the interview and being able to count to 10. Got chronic fatigue from the job (same thing as what they call long covid now).
In the last 6 years it’s all turned around. Met my wife, quite my job. Started a boarding Cattery and a small arable farm. Used what ever money I have to buy better machinery than I need so I can cope with illness and work.
I have a 3 year old and 1year old boy who I look after as my wife works in a better job. Finances are tight now and still struggle with fatigue but never been as happy. I don’t count that I work as I enjoy the tractor work and the cats. It had left life so much better.
So to anyone struggling and think it’s not worth it, it might not be today, but some day in the very near future it will. How my little boys look at me and follow me around all day long (as bloody hard as it is putting up with them) it is also amazing

That’s why I stopped contracting work. I did it for 15 years or so but eventually taking the combine on a 10 mile road trip to combine somebody else’s crops juggling breakdowns and the weather just got too worrisome. And I don’t miss it one little bit.

Thing to think about with careers is not only the occupation itself but the situation such as employed, self employed, big firm, small firm, own firm etc. Location is also a big factor along with travelling time. Almost as important as the type of work.

Most. but not all, dads are heroes to their children and perhaps that is why that Jesus bloke described Big G as a father!

Something I never thought about when I embarked on my engineering career was that all the serious work at that time was in dark satanic mills in rough areas of the country. That really took a lot of the pleasure out if the job. Coming from a rural area with was a massive and unwelcome change of circumstances.

Having been in a similar position after selling my cows and handing my tenancy back to our WONDERFUL!!! Landlord. I had a couple of interviews with a water company these didn't workout and I was left looking for alternatives, a bit of groundworks and other bits, there seemed to be no chance of getting a mortgage being self employed without 3 years of books behind me.
By chance one night saw a job going in a local quarry as a machine op, applied, interview and was offered the job same day!! Not what I was expecting but if I can stick at it ,long term security. They will put me through all training and full apprenticeship.
Trying something completely different to dairy farming(at 45)is extremely daunting and not sure quarrying will be for me, but I will give it a good go.
As they say there is life after cows!!
Ollie not sure where you are based but have a look on Tarmac website there's about 10 pages of jobs from admin to machine ops and anything else in between.
A bit long but chin up and keep looking theres alot of work out there and they always say its easier to find a job when you have a job.

Probably a misquote on my part but I think that it was Saul of Tarsus who wrote ......
whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely and whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue and praise, then think on those things!

Not peddling religion but most of us who have been through deep depression in our lives do realise that our daily focus of thought was at least very unhelpful to recovery.

As a man thinketh, then so is he!

Good, sound, psychology; no?

A crap job can be used as a springboard to better employment, or even as an opening to better things within the same company.

there is always going to be a certain amount of crap with any job but you have to look at the good side I can think of a thousand and one jobs that are crap but the end result is satisfying the one big thing is poor company whilst doing the crap jobs I spent over twenty years working as a one-man band and some jobs were saul destroying but I have also worked with slackers and moaners but if you can come home to a good woman it makes it all worthwhile while working in a quarry loading wagons some would want two buckets on the front two at the bak and one in the middle then the next day they would curse you because they wanted it loading another way they were just occurred barstewards bully boys just wanted a reason to complain and intimidating but it was just a part of the job there are always people that want to make life unpleasant I suppose being a big lad helped if they gave me too much jip I would ask where do you want it then drop it in from a big height whoomft then say sory didnt you want it there
