Chap local to us did it maybe 30 year ago, no children and on a rented farm, it got to a point where the milkround was losing customers to the supermarkets,he sold all the cows, which just about covered the overdraft, and started buying in his milk, after that it all went the wrong way, he sublet the land, the landlord found out and gave him notice to quit, now he was faced with nowhere to live and was suffering with farmers lung, he went and threw himself head first down an old well on the farm, the body wasn't found for 3 weeks.

Sadest thing is that even his wife had no idea how desperate the business had got, he'd hidden the fact they were being evicted and two years behind with the rent, or worse how desperate George had got.

Is there anywhere to go to discuss the implications of suicide.
My father did it, and pressures of work and marriage problems are bringing back the whole thing.
I was only young but it's something that has always lurked and is there now.
Anyone know where you can go just to talk

You can call FCN Farm Community Network from 7-11pm every day of the year, there will always be someone there to be able to discuss things with you

Farm Crisis Network, or Samaritans? or more likely as @blackbob in previous posts on this thread said, to deal with the long term effects of suicide, a psychiatrist is probably the best place to go

My sister did it. She was not involved farming but the fallout remains the same. It is a really awkward, cowardly thing to do and causes a great deal of trouble for those remaining.
I don't think it's cowardly at all. I have seen it first hand and know of several people that have been close to it.
It is not a good place to be and I would never call them cowards.
Lost all hope, like a ship without a rudder , but cowards no.

I disagree. Simply avoiding your problems is cowardly. Suicide is the ultimate escape. I'm not looking for a debate on it - this is simply my view.

I'd say it's over simplifying a very real illness to say the least.

Using your rationale, what problems do you think Gary Speed was running away from for example?
If I were able to ask him, I'd let you know. The point being is that nobody can - nobody can question him, reason with him, find out why all those around him are of a lower priority than his own self-loathing. He had it all, but he deemed his personal circumstance to be more of a burden than abandoning those he loved the most without even a hint as to why.

Cowardly.

I would maybe liken it to a slippery slope. You're tootling along, everything ok, then a couple of things go wrong and it knocks you. Something else happens that maybe wouldn't normally bother you, but because you're a bit down already, you sink a bit lower. You're now a bit more touchy, so even the slightest things send you off on one. Don't know if that makes sense, but it's how you deal with it that matters.
