First post on this topic.

Been struggling with depression for about a year now-bought on by work related stress/bullying. Thought I was on the road to recovery a few weeks ago as I was feeling a lot better, but last week I felt as low as I had done for months. this meant another week off work.

Now I'm worrying about going back to work although there's no real reason to be worried.
Done CBT on the net but now have a face to face appt booked.

Sometimes it seems that I spend all my time just imagining what can go wrong.

Anyone got any thoughts or advice?

am i right in thinking that you take a scenario and imagine the worse course of events that could happen?....you then frantically try and plan ways to avoid that from taking place?.....but when you do... you simply think up another scenario and start the same process again?

PS..................just had a look at the link and looks to me as though CBT can be potentially very helpful and enlightening. Both for people who are presently depressed and to help people from becoming depressed. Mental hygiene; so to speak.

Yes that's just what it's like when I'm feeling low.

thanks for the comments and support everyone

Yes admitting you've got a problem (and not blaming yourself) is a BIG step.

thats exactly how i felt in 2008.....the good news is i think it could helped a lot with some meds......my late father had those symptoms even worse than me but we both benefited from seratonin uptake inhibitors....it's a regret of mine that we didn't find out about it decades before his death......go see your gp and ATB:)

Just wanted to post about our free online mental health tool we've designed specifically for farmers. It's based on cognitive behavioural therapy & is being offered by the University of Glasgow (ethical approval ref: 200160003). We're looking for UK farmers to try it out - more information is available at tinyurl.com/farmermh - just a quick survey to complete before you get free access to the tool!

CBT is a good thing but just a word of caution.

If you have a big problem that is bothering you or,holding you back or making your life a misery, then sometimes it's best to take the bull by the horns and try to do something about tackling that problem.

I have been in jobs in the past that did not suit my personality and it can really get you down, I did all the CBT stuff but it was a bit like just treating the symptoms rather than tackling the root case of the problem which was that I was in the wrong job.

I have been in several different jobs or careers during my life. Eventually each one has become stale or unsuitable due changing circumstances often beyond my control. I think when this happens it's better to admit you need a change and new direction rather than run yourself into the ground or drive yourself nuts trying to convince yourself you are still doing the right thing.

@DrWazzock

First I would like to point out I'm not very good with words but want to assure you I'm not arguing or being negative about your post.

Although from reading your post this is how I understood CBT exactly worked.

I was shown the circle of words, Thoughts, Feelings, Actions and told change one thing (action) to have an affect on the other two.

Your action was to change career.

I changed my whole lifestyle. ( I'm happy to give more detail ).

My apologies if I have misunderstood your post and got the wrong end of the stick.
It just seemed to be very similar to my situation.

I have had a quick peep at your site and it all looks good to me, and it's free! Isn't it?

Completely free! We need more UK farmers and members of the farming community (wives etc) to try it out and give us a bit of feedback about how we can improve it! You can use as much or as little of the site as you want and it has a good evidence base for making people feel more able to deal with their difficulties. Any information please don't hesitate to get in touch [email protected]

I don't know how many takers you have already had for your services but it would be interesting to have some feedback in here. I'm sure that many of our readers would be encouraged by such feedback. We are not talking personal details but general information as to how helpful the individual found the service.

Of course if it would be of interest we'd happily provide some results once they've been written up provided the moderators are OK with this!

I was thinking more of how the individuals find the service to be of help and believing that it would be encouraging for others, I can't imagine why the moderators would object.

But then again, I am open to be educated. :)

Or is the service something that you intend selling later on; once proved to be successful?

It would be fantastic if any users on here would feel able to share their experience of the site on here! We're currently trying to make the site as helpful to farmers as possible, with the view of it being a free-to-access site after the research has been completed! :)
