Dear straw

First year I housed I got excellent barley straw delivered €19.
Second year I had mostly enough from year one, but bought some OK stuff for €20.
Third year I paid €26 for a mixed load, some good, some downright dangerous.
Next year I'm lambing outdoors (again), fup that.

Hmm!! Anyone tried this with Oat straw, not sure if it would ferment and if so, what you would get out? Seems like a good excuse for an experiment?

I just want rid of it. Have had a couple of goes at headland straw with a lot of grass in that has worked. Oats straw, if not desiccated, is wetter than grass and almost needs treating like hay to get right. I just wondered if anyone had tried wrapping it? Definitely wouldn't expect straw.

£75 for a bale of straw .just think about it
If 50 cattle used a bale a day all winter that's £300 head

That would pay for quite a lot of cubicles and auto scrapers! [emoji15]

Under sown barley straw makes good wrapped bales, similar feed value to average hay.
Sometimes combine high then mow before baling.

That's how the sac deemed it. But those bales were not mowed to there wouldn't have been that much grass in it.

I'm not sure if he would travel as far as you, sadly. Alot of what he delivers is with tractor and trailer and I think Dumfries is as far up as he is prepared to come.

we used to grow Penarth Winter Oats ..would get up like a crop of maize . made fantastic silage cut green . one hell off a crop

Good oat straw with a bit of urea molasses stuff is bloody good feed.

From what I’ve heard the grass can get quite long in the undersow, it’ll be new seeds so...
