Death after crash involving tractor and car in Somerset

No. Only an agricultural trailed appliance if it's max gross weight is not more than twice it's unladen weight, otherwise it's a trailer ( or at least the rules for a trailer apply).
So would I be right in thinking that a 12 to tractor pulling a 12 to tanker with dribble bar could legally carry 11.5 ton of slurry but would be illegal at 12.5 ton?

In fact, is it right that the addition of a dribble bar or whatever moves a tanker from the same classification as a trailer to an agricultural appliance which has different rules?

No. Sorry but I forgot to add that when an agricultural trailed appliance exceeds 14,230kgs it also becomes a trailer.
In your case the 12 ton tanker could only have 2230 kgs of slurry before it became a trailer and over 6290 kgs before it became illegal. You'll understand now that when we were trying to increase the weight limit it wasn't just for barley barons!!

maybe, but 50/60 ton gross with a tractor and then wonder why the HGV boys are getting pee'd off

Nobody was suggesting anywhere near those weights, max suggested was 41t for a tri axle on road friendly suspension ( air or hydraulic) and both the FTA and RHA were consulted first and happy with the proposals.
@Tarw Coch was suggesting they were running out of an AD plant, I suspect that alone is illegal on red regardless of weight. Someone at VOSA might get promotion.

To be fair, I wouldn't have a clue wether they were running in red or white. But that's a whole another debate, use of red diesel for what is essentially power generation.

you know, there is bending the law a bit, and sticking 2 fingers up at the law,

this is the equivalent in the HGV world of a Scania 640, V8 running at over 75 mph and loaded to over 75 tonnes gross, and that would be on 6 axles not 5,
But if it's big shiny and new it's ok, it's that old guy trundling along on his 135 you need to watch out for, he's got no brakes on his trailer.

Surely they'd be better hauling the stuff up the road in trucks and having a nice light tanker in the field for spreading?
Watching youtube the other night there was a flash farming outfit in Scotland hauling rye for an AD plant, triaxle stewart trailers loading to the nuts, cant be under can it? They were weighing them all but never mentioned the weights.
Does make you laugh when you see stuff like that then farmers claim they have too many regulations!
