I see from today’s budget that 15 years of Tory rule won’t have balanced the books. What a surprise! Austerity doesn’t work it leads to under investment and missed opportunities, pitiful.

And how did 10 years of spending money as if it's going out of fashion help?its got us where we are now and let's be honest there has never been austerity in this country they just took the foot off the gas a little

Turned out badly as thatchers home owning dream turned to dust. What’s today’s solution? Let’s “reignite” that dream with stamp duty cuts. More private debt for over expensive houses. Low skill high rent economy brilliant.

so whats your answer?
There is no easy answer. Vibrant economies need high quality labour, yesterday the chancellor gave extra money for mathematics in schools, well the smallest of small steps in the right direction, but woefully too little as productivity stagnates. The other thing is infrastructure, digital and physical connections Lag behind other countries and the chronic shortage of housing has to be tackled. I don’t think the Tory government will do any of this since they are ideologically opposed to state intervention, but who else but the state can deliver 300,000 new homes a year? It’s beyond the capacity of the private sector for sure.

1. Skilled migrants only.
2. Education & apprenticeships.
3. University only for the gifted and sensible degrees.
4. Develop "Brownfield sites" into rented accommodation.
5. Utilise empty public buildings for social enterprise/housing the homeless.
6. Build more jails.
7. Sentenced to 5 years...you do 5 years.
8. Pre-meditated/intentional murders with DNA proof..... long drop short rope.
9. Re-instate corporal punishment at school.
10. Brexit...... walk away in December.

I would take 5 of my Top Ten. :)

The government could do worse than compulsory purchase the 200,000 houses lying empty in the UK.

I dont think education is the answer

We've created some of the best inventions in the world and we have some of the best skilled people in the world

There is just no emphasis on manufacturing in the UK, quite the reverse in fact

If we can design the best computer chips in the world why are they made in Taiwan ?

Well that’s 2/3 of one year sorted. Trouble is they won’t do anything like that purely for ideological reasons. I’m not saying selling council houses in itself was a bad idea, but the stock should have been replenished.

So we have some of the best skilled people in the world, but we shouldn't bother about education. So is this UK genius pool is down to superior genetics.

I don’t think there is one answer. But an educated work force is undeniably more productive because it can undertake more valuable work. There are successful high tech companies in the UK, places like Cambridge do very well economically. When you have centers of excellence they should be encouraged. I believe the government is right to fund R&D in purely academic areas, it is something we do well, we should value knowledge for knowledge sake, there is no telling where such research can lead.

Far too much generalisation that the education system even works

So, going by your logic, we have the most people in further education than ever - yet zero economic boom

Further we hear very often that migrants are a boon to the economy - yet zero economic boom

As Einstein said "The first sign of madness is doing exactly the same thing and expecting different results"

As I would point out ... if anyone in education was any good, they wouldnt be there they'd be millionaires

Education should be good ... I dont agree with the generalisation that they are more productive because that implies those doing education are better than those working in the field which is not the case.

I dont think the government is correct at all ... acedemics make VERY poor business men and very poor workers
