Debt

You said they must stay at home to inherit anything. What if one was good with animals wanted and to be a vet. What are you going to say? That's ok son/daughter, make your own way in the world and follow your own path/dreams but don't think in any way shape or form that your going to get a penny from me when I die unless you come home and farm:(.
I've used vet as an example but it could as easily be mechanic, shed builder, contractor, consultant. All jobs linked to ag but not actually farming home farm.
theyll not get a chunk of the farm or millions but wont necessarily get left 0

As a result of this miserable policy/ kind of thing ,a lot of people farming don't really want to and a lot of people who want to farm cant - then there is the misery of the massive family fallouts created by all this wealth retention and obligations .

its the way family farming has always been and the only reason most are still going
I know a serious number around our age who, although desperately keen to take over the family farm, simply couldn't due to the rift it would cause with siblings.

All the time it becomes more difficult, as the land asset is simply so overvalued - never mind all the Tonka toys and stock.

It's actually difficult to have a succession plan, until you have a rough idea of what your children want to do, or at least I'm finding it difficult.

As Digger64 said, I can also think of many good farms run down because the "farmer" only became farmer by default - either the better candidates weren't interested or weren't born as The First Male Heir

Achieving the aim of living in miserable false poverty. HIGH Five as I would say to the kids.

IMHO people come first and the business is just a way of facilitating that. Should we spoil our kids, probably not; but to pretend money is too tight to mention is frankly an insult to those living in true poverty.

Sexism is still rife when it comes to succession within the industry. I know of two large farms that have been passed to Male family members only, one to a nephew and the other is faltering under the charge of a brother that’s ‘Lording’ it at the minute.

A very difficult situation sometimes and can even be understood in certain situations to prevent splitting of a sustainable farm to a shadow of its former self.

if the land wasn't so over valued they could be bought out fairly by the business,do their own thing and perhaps all live happily ever after .
if letting land wasn't potentially penalized by taxation policy or stigmatised by the industry/ society it could be held in trust for the next generation who" might" want to take it on whilst letting to someone who wants to hold the fort - its really to simple to be true isn't it ?

This thread just goes to show how popular farming is
and how diverse the people wanting to farm are.
Farming is now seen as trendy but don't worry
the BBC are doing their best to destroy that image:(
