Deceiving the consumer

Bought what we presumed was 100% British (Somerset) Gammon steaks today from a local shop..... but it would seem not once we spotted a label underneath the top one, which although blurry says “midland meat company made using EU&British pork”

Re-read the OP and it has been labelled in a way to conceal the origin of the product. That is a case for trading standards to get involved with, re-labelling food is bloody dodgy in my view.

I will only buy pork like this from John Thorners. Where it's all local stuff. I won't buy this kind of thing from supermarkets any longer either as you cook it and 10 tonnes of brine comes out and you are left with a miserable looking excuse for a meal.

Have our own pork beef and lamb in the freezer but for some reason really fancied a gammon yesterday 🤦‍♂️ Even the dates are a month difference on the two labels

Small farm up the road from here used to have an "Eggs for sale" sign up. Loads of folk used to come from the towns to purchase these eggs, loved to see the half dozen or so hens running around the yard.
Eggs came from a local battery farm, no claims were ever made but the customers just assumed. Nothing wrong with the eggs but they weren't what the customer thought they were and the sellers were very much aware of this.

I know of one of them in your neck of the woods too. He does have quite a few hens but they don't each lay a dozen a day

I often wonder how many people visit Snugbury's ice cream and think all the milk comes from the farm too.

Was in a nearby butcher one day and took various things away. He makes a big thing about the provenance of his product all free range etc. Only I was aware when I saw the box he placed the meat in, that it came from a a local chicken processor who only does broilers. And is not even RT.

trading standards, this confusion has been going on for years ? why can this not br sorted out is beyond me ? if its true about the amount of meat such as chicken coming in from tailand and the vast amount of pork coming in from all sorts of countries, vast quantities of this must be sold with the consumer either thinking or being delibritly tricked into belivering that the meat was born grown slaughtered and packed in the UK?

I wonder how many of them know it is made from milk and that milk comes from a cow. :D
My place is nearer the other one and you wouldn't believe how far they come from just to go there. Nightmare at a weekend when schools are out (not at the moment though!)

I was talking to a lad that bought into my local butchers a few years back and he’s very enthusiastic and decided to visit all his suppliers to touch base but when he went to the local pig farm the senior partner had bought from for years and asked to see his pigs there was a reality check when the guy told him that no pigs had been on that farm for 15 years.
No more pork was ever purchased from that guy afterwards tho😉

Some dickish comments on here.
We started our farmers market 22 years ago, in that time it has generated hundreds of thousands of pounds in and for the local rural economy, jobs, multiplier effect for village shops etc etc.
There were farmers selling at the market this morning who have a waiting list to join their home delivery schemes, who sell everything they produce before it is born/ planted, at a price of their setting, with no taxpayer handouts.
Oh, and the hardcore supporters of our market ? People who belong to FoE, Wildlife trust, RSPB etc etc. The people you love to hate. The one category of society we never see shopping there ? Yup, 'proper' farmers.

Remember how hard everyone came down on Tesco for having RT carrots with the wrong country on the pack.

This thread seems laid back in comparison!

If the OP shows fraud then fraud is fraud at any level and should be punished as such.
That's different from the dickish comments regarding farmers markets.

At least you can/could go and see some cows milked at that one so it's kind of connected.
I used to chop silage and pump slurry there years ago, always got free ice cream when we were working there (y).
Went back a couple of years ago, couldn't believe how big it had got.
