Anyone know a good supplier for a decent quality hedgebill/bill/slasher kind of tool? Any smaller blacksmith kind of guys rather than the likes of spear and jackson and bulldog

Going against the grain here but the fiskars bill hook is awesome, light weight but very well balanced, can work with it all day without feeling like your wrist will break.

Their axes are some of the best as well.

The Fiskars one is good for a short handled slasher, but the sharpening has to be just right or it quickly looses the edge - especially on the hook. I quite like their "Brush Axe" but would prefer it to be on a long handle.

Wouldn't go anywhere in the landrover without one, and I'm 38. I just get the usual from the builders merchant. Probably spear and Jackson. Hard to say, as there'd only be a new one here every 15-20 years.

I find just as soon as you get the bugger wore-in its wore out.
But Fiskars stuff is good.
P.S.
Not a billhook, but I rescued a sickle or hook?, (as I think I grew up calling them), anyway rescued from a Skip, put away and forgot about until I used to tidy up the fruit garden recently, and a joy to use, so light and thin, but holds a good edge, unfortunately it puts newer stuff to shame.

I found an old Elwell one here in a hedge & put a new handle on it - it was the best I've used. Sadly I lost it about 15 years back & bought a Bulldog one new -I quite like it but not as much as the old 'un, but it still feels fine in the hand. Son bought me a Fiskars one last year which is also great (I WAS sceptical at first - the shape looked all wrong) especially for clearing bramble grass, weeds etc at the base of a hedge. This one always lives in the quad box since the plastic sheath both protects the edge & stops it damaging anything else in transit.
