Lack of personnel is a huge problem for the RN. At one stage last year both a T45 and a T23 were tied up because there just wasn’t enough bodies to man them.

Big push to get those who’ve left to rejoin, particularly on the engineering side. We’re about to lose one of our lads at work whose been out for three years now. Applied to rejoin back in August.

It's all wasted money anyway, let's face it. All the money ever spent on defence is spent on things that rust, get worn out and then scrapped or used and then recycled. It doesn't ever produce anything.
So we need a change in mindset just as reverting to MAFF from DEFRA would give farming a boost reverting to the War Office from the Ministry of Defence would give the armed forces a boost no General would be allowed any new tanks or missiles until he had used up what he already had thus reducing waste.

or perhaps they would just use our own tanks for target practice to use them up

Yep navy undermanned and army 80,000ish while similar power for comparison purposes, the French Army is 120,000 strong.

What would you do with those extra 40,000 UK soldiers, so we can have same number as the French? And as for a navy undermanned - what would you do with the extra manning?

Now if you said UK was undermanned on, say, care workers, nurses, lollipop ladies well maybe. But more soldiers and sailors. Do you know of a war or some form of civil defence operation that requires all those extra salaries? Russians coming to a beach in north norfolk? Irish Army about to invade Uster? Just wondering, thats all.

Apologies in advance, but you come over as a bit of a military man, if you do not mind me saying. I come across a few retired soldiers and airmen - they are all for spending money!! All of them in their 50's early 60's.

Yep, isn't the Paris Fire Brigade a military unit?
If you say, I don't know. Most French Fire-fighters are retained, I think there are only about 40,000 full time ones like Paris. It's always felt a bit odd here to be standing in the supermarket carpark, to suddenly have half a dozen Gendarmerie armoured cars arrive and the crews all jump out and go shopping.

I certainly never heard of the UK police needing armoured cars except perhaps in Ulster. o_O

Open Letter: Response to Eat Balanced Campaign on Social Media

Letter to the Editor

January 2021

Have you seen the exciting new AHDB ‘We Eat Balanced’ £1.5 million marketing campaign launched on January 4? Anyone watching social media over the past two weeks won’t be surprised its stimulated debate with huge support, outrage, passion and enthusiasm all stirred up.

We want to inject balance into the debate about red meat and dairy – to start having a different national conversation and put farming’s voice out there. The campaign is being run across TV, print and in retail as well as social media, so millions of consumers will have the opportunity to see it. We know 98 per cent of households enjoy meat and dairy but some are looking to reduce, and this is who our campaign speaks to.

Farmers and consumers alike have congratulated us for airing...
