Defender 90 Drop Arm

Trying to replace the drop-arm that comes from the steering box on our Defender 90, but can't get it off the spline! In the picture you can see our 2-prong puller done up as tight as we can. Had plenty of WD40 and even a little heat (bearing in mind the box seals which we don't want to ruin!) plus obviously the hammer but again worried about the seals.

Wondered if anyone has any clever ideas?! Are we right to worry about damaging the seals if using more than a little force/heat?

Thanks.

Give it a sharp tap with a hammer while pulling it and try and get the pullers square on to the 'pull' your not pulling straight in that pic;) ive had one give grief before but it came of in the end (with a bit of brutality!)

Hydraulic puller. Wd40 waste of time it evaporates, get some proper penetrating fluid such as fuchs silkopen its graphited and gets into the joint. Once tight with puller give it a belt with the hammer to shock it.

I've done several of these and every time I have put the arm under a lot of pressure with a decent puller then e other a good sack on the side of the arm with a hammer or just gone in the house for a cuppa and it's been laying on the floor when I came back . Either way you don't wanna be in the way when they fly off .

Agree, probably safer to screw the nut back on a few threads.

Put the nut back on just in case it decides to come while you're not looking.
A bit of intense heat in one spot with the pull on, but if you delay the box will need a seal.
So try cold first ........
Chisel in at the back with the pull on

http://www.dingocroft.co.uk/ This co has a fantastic purpose built puller you can hire. Alternatively I'd give the drop arm some serious heat and a decent hydraulic puller like a Sykes Pickavant type. There's no way the puller in your pic will exert enough pull, particularly at the angle shown. Speed is the essence here and a C02 fire extinguisher may help in cooling quickly too.
As @Mursal has said too.

What seems to be the problem with it exactly?? ( asking as I am a L/R main dealer mechanic)
Is it the steering box itself? Personally, I would way up the time/cost issue. It would prob be easier and quicker to remove the complete box and replace with a second hand one, complete with the arm.
Failing that, then I would remove the box complete soak the arm end in diesel and then trap it in a vice at a better angle and as suggested, use a hydraulic puller and a good hammer.
Either way, Best of luck and keep us updated!
