Deformed Lamb

Hammer here. Once when we were about to leave to go off for a weeks hols with the kids, I looked out of the window and saw my cat "playing" with a rabbit that had mixi. I couldn't bear the thought of an already suffering animal being slowly tortured by the cat, the poor rabbit couldn't even see. So I decided that I would deal with it, went out to the shed and lifted a hammer, shooed away the cat and did the deed, I then looked up and three little horrified faces were at the window! Happy holidays children!:D:oops::oops:

@Leereade It called a schistosomus reflexus.

Hammer is fine for lambs. Personally I always swung by back legs into the wall or something hard. You have to do it like you mean it.

We get some people bring them to the surgery for us to inject because they don't like doing it.

Nothing really out of the ordinary this year except 2 lambs with twisted back legs that might have been schmallenberg or might not.
Had this lamb last year that I couldn't pull due to the tumour on it's chest. Took ewe for a cesarean but the vet cut the lamb up and pulled it out [emoji106]

My previous boss called it 'stanchion rash'. Swing them head first against a wall or solid gatepost... gun when they're too big for that :bigtears:

That "ping" on an RSJ can never be forgotten mind.
Solid wall or RSJ here.

@Leereade we had a lamb a month ago which was 2 lambs fused together but shared the front legs and head, so 4 back legs and 2 back halves of the body. I've got a picture but parts are missing from when I ripped them off the body getting it out.

That reminds me of my dad. Us kids were in the car going somewhere, and our kitten must have been on the wheel when mum backed out. Kitten writhing around on concrete, so mum ran to get dad to finish it off. Did he wait till we'd driven off? Nope, lump of 3x2 while we looked on in horror  I can laugh now

There was a rabbit with mixi on the school path a couple of weeks ago when I went to collect number 3 from pre-school at dinner time.I thought I can't leave it suffering and potentially still wriggling for the main school at 3.30  so I told the teacher about it and she told me to do my 'farmer thing' :) I sent the kids down the path and the rabbit made friends with a telegraph pole, then I hid it in the hedge bottom.
That was my first, and it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be when it was obviously suffering.

I am not a hard man at all but I really struggle to see how you can keep sheep and not expect to have to kill some lambs each lambing. A piece of 2" timber does the job. This is livestock farming. If it isn't right on day one it never will be. Concentrate on those that are going to make a profit. Heaven knows its hard enough to make money anyway.
