Today (25 November), the Chancellor made a statement to Parliament outlining the 2020 Spending Review. This settlement increases Defra's budgets by almost £1 billion, and will allow us to take forward some of our highest priority agendas.

The settlement:

  • Ensures total farm support in England of £2.415 billion in 2021/22 to meet the government's manifesto commitment to maintain the current annual budget to farmers.
  • Provides more than £90 million for the Nature for Climate Fund, to keep us on track to restore more peatlands and plant 30,000 hectares of trees a year by the end of this Parliament.
  • Increases funding in National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty to more than £75 million, with a further £7 million for the England Coast Path and Coast-to-Coast National Trail.
  • Provides exceptional multi-year provision for flood and coastal defence and resilience including the first four years of the £5.2 billion six-year capital investment programme and £200 million resilience innovation fund. This shows our commitment to better protect 336,000 homes and non-residential properties.
  • Ensures funding for fisheries is maintained in line with the government's manifesto commitment in 2021/22 with £13.5 million for England.
  • Provides support to implement flagship Environment Bill measures including biodiversity net gain for development, creating new legally binding environmental targets, and the Office for Environmental Protection.
