DEFRA Call for Evidence - Labelling for Animal Welfare

I've made the RT grain and imported grain fiasco very clear

I've blamed RT for mission creep beyond earlier reasonable standards

I've said I want statutory information available for consumer choice. Union Jack and a few other statutory things and then any premium / differentiation is up to food industry to promote inc the assuarnce bodies. Leave this off the packet as the UK has minimum standards

I've gone in heavy on imports saying it's not a labelling issue so much as a question of why any food is imported brought in where it would be illegal to be produced in the UK. Get the BCP sorted and do frequent random testing eg Ractopamine for pigmeat

Careful what you wish for.
If we want full, mandatory labelling then there has to be a clear and concise way of proving the rearing standards. That effectively makes RT a necessity, and I can fully understand the logic behind animals either being reared to those standards for life, or not at all. It’s difficult to argue for the current ‘60 day’ holding period, especially to anyone outside the industry.
Enforcing proper ‘country of origin’ labelling would be a good start. I would also like to see stun or non-stun as well, NOT halal as most don’t (or won’t) understand that term
But surely feeders on Assured Farms have duty to buy store stock from Non-Assured Farms, to rescue them from squalor, pain and depravity. In fact, they should get bonus points for doing so.

And another thing. If UK beef, lamb and pork is so good, why did (or do?) USA military bases in the UK insist on feeding their personnel on imported USA products.

Can't believe this thread seems to have stalled and on such an important issue
