Defra: Farming is Changing

In the fullness of time I can see the headcount at Deathra dropping pretty drastically.

There can't be many left at Defra now - their budget has been ruthlessly cut along with other government departments since 2008. Some of the cuts were welcomed by Gove (n)

The capping removes nearly £50k from my BPS in year one of the tapering off, never mind the later years. If anyone thonks that ELMS is going to fill that void is mistaken. They will make it just juicy enough for everyone to put in wild flowers, rough pasture and trees to be more attractive than the current commodity treadmill. I have budgeted a break even on my current 5 year Higher Tier CS scheme in the best case scenario.

I already farm in an environmentally friendly way, I hope that this will be supported too as well as supporting those who have yet to see the light.

Based on personal past experiences of Stewardship schemes change overs, don't hold your breath!! :(

As others here will have found, perfectly good Options, working well, but don't quite fit the new prescription... Gone. Barking!

Nothing to fear, remember the front man of vote leave is now our PM!

This flyer was put on farmers' windscreens in Melton market. I remember thinking at the time "This is utter bullsh*t"

I doubt it. There'll be new hair brained enviro schemes to administer.......

Well, from a cursory read of the missive from HM Govt, nothing in the document makes me think we will see one jot less regulation or "monitoring" in the future, or whatever it is called then.

I will be thinking long and hard what we will be doing in the future as both SWMBO and I are the wrong side of 60, no farming kids, although all 3 like having it as a rural retreat ;)

Yup, I'm only still farming cos of the nice country house, and the ability to drive classic Ford tractors about. The farming bit is a f**king joke.

I'd like to see a three year stamp duty amnesty, and local surveyors provided, to encourage farmers with blocks of away land to swap it with other farmers to make more ring fenced holdings and reduce road journeys.

It all used to be ring fenced holdings. Still is here. How did it get to this state of affairs with harvest time now punctuated by the ripple of cleated rubber along our A roads? Now a field adjoining a farm will be bought by folks from miles away who presumably can do it more efficiently as they outbid the adjoining farmer. At one time it would have been good manners to offer it to the adjoining farmer and let him have first chance of it but not anymore. That kind of slack used to cut in the past and allowed orderly and logistically sensible expansion of holdings.

Lump sum payment to get out? How much?

The issue I have with this and other options that are being discussed, is how will HMRC will assess them...

Lump sum sounds like a "give with one hand, take back with the other" sort of offering from the Govt. Unless it's a tax free offering.

The other concern with putting whole farms into what is in effect a zero production system, is how HMRC will deal with income and APR on death. Sound rather like non farming Farmers who HMRC are looking very closely at.

All in, another minefield...
