Dehorning by sedation

Got the vet in to sedate the calves and dehorn them, a vet and her assistant dehorned 115 calves in 5 hours. Me and wife would have done about 50 in 5 hours and been absolutely knackered as lignocaine never seems to work on all of them.
Probably more expensive than doing it ourselves, but I don’t care, it was so easy on both us and the calves! After sedation (quick jab in neck), they walk off, lay down and sleep for an hour. Lovely

I thought it was madness when i first heard about it but i can see the benefit of it now, vet said its fantastic for doing large amounts and miles easier. I still do mine in the calf crush though with all the noise and rock n rolling!

Our old vet would do this with calves that had been born at grass and missed dehorning and castration. Much easier on man and beast, big plus was that afterwards they went and slept or at least drunkenly lay down, very little bleeding from the dehorning as they were so relaxed.
