Deleted posts

If comments need to be deleted, why are they totally removed? It makes a thread make no sense. Why can't the text of the post be removed (and replaced with something along the lines of 'This comment has been removed by a moderator for breaching forum guidelines'), but the post itself remain up? Thus we can see when stuff is deleted, and whose posts have been deleted, not just it disappear into the ether as if it had never existed at all? The latter smacks of 1984 type behaviour by mods.

There are many reasons content is deleted - lots of the time is because we are asked to by the person who has posted it. In short, it mostly about time. Its very easy to multi select and tidy via the delete. We can do what you say, but it is possible.

I'm not questioning the need to delete posts, either because of their content, or at the request of the poster, but why make it appear that nothing was ever said in the first place?

Because that’s how the delete function works in the software. Members use it all the time to delete their own posts.

Ok, so what happens to a post that has quoted another post that is subsequently deleted? Is it also automatically deleted? Because in the thread I'm thinking of posts that replied to the deleted posts also disappeared.

Since I have no idea of the post you are referring to, why anything was removed or what was removed its hard to say. Moderators are generally just doing their best and reacting to what they are asked to do.

Didn’t used to be the case.
Don’t know the post you have in mind but remember a post in the past naming someone/some company, deleted by the poster but not before being copied as a quote in another post, the quote was still there and all could see the original outing.

I posted a joke in the off topic that didn't go down well with some. Apperently now deleted. I don't agree, but hey, whatever. I can see the point in deleting but it makes it seem a bit censorious to remove all evidence of there ever being anything. Also, it makes you loose all context. Just leave the post and replace the text by "this post was deleted". Also notify the poster so he can keep up at least.
I am not saying I distrust the well meaning moderators, it just makes it seem a bit iffy.

If we delete a post it doesn't remove it from any further posts that have quoted it so we manually either have to go and edit that quoted post out of the reply or just delete the whole reply. In my view if we delete a post most people will hardly notice and not question it, if you delete a post and leave evidence it was deleted with the words 'this post was deleted' you will end up with pages of discussion about what was deleted rather than the thread just moving on.

When we delete a post there is an optional box to explain why to the person who posted it, but you have to check a tickbox and type a reply in there. Sometimes you can forget to do this if your in a rush or type a reply but forget to check the box saying notify the poster. Once you've clicked delete its too late then. 99% of the time its often fairly obvious why a post would have been deleted anyway.

I get why you'd do it, don't agree though.

It was deleted by me and there is a comment also

If anyone thinks they've a right to make fun about suicide, please PM me and I'll remind them of a few salient facts

It being about suicide is far beside the point, I am saying that deleting the messages is the opposite of making a point.
Just make a statement that it's not cool to joke about a certain topic, people may disagree but hey, your forum, your rules.

I notice you didn't PM

You were notified about the deletion at the time
