Well as I understood it he stayed on camping for a while as:

1. He was genuinely interested in seeing how / what professional archaelogists would uncover
2. Stopping some low lifes plundering the site
Night hawkers etc and every other dectorists have a go too.
If not been heard at Coroners Court and Declared Treasure trove then once in public domain, they be there possibly!

It was featured on this mornings BBC breakfast. They left most of it in the ground, and the archaeologists have lifted it in a block, so it can be dissected apart in a safe place. It looks like is going to be really interesting as there are parts of the leather horse harness still there, as well as metal parts.
I found some flint hand tools in our back garden, its just wonderful to think that someone used these over a thousand years ago, and it had just been sitting below the soil since then.

Finder done the right thing and stopped digging when he realised what was there.
The context is as important as the find which is often forgotten by many.
A lot will be learnt from that and the preservation is remarkable, probably why it took them 3 weeks to block lift it.
Slightly different law in Scotland where the finder receives the ex gratia payment.
Dare I say it is a better system North of the border in my humble?
