Deutz Fahr agrofarm 420 gear problem

Hi all

in need of some advice on what could be wrong with my yard tractor.
Basically it doesn’t have first gear in any of the high ranges but when in the low it will start to move but like a clutch slip and then it stops and beeps putting it in to neutral after 1500rpm.
Any ideas?

Are you talking mechanical 1st gear or the splitters?

Mechanical first gear. All the others are fine. Put it into snail gears and it will move but like the clutch is slipping.

There’s the hare and tortoise (high low split on the main gear leaver) and the smaller stick with hare, tortoise, big snail and smaller snail.
Starts to work in (snail) small stick gears

If it has no mechanical 1 st gear then firstly,check the external linkage where it goes into the gearbox , get someone to select first gear whilst you watch it ,I suspect the synchroniser has failed , or perhaps the grub screw has come out of the fork, does it feel like it’s selecting a gear , do you feel it clicking into the detent?. If so sounds like the linkage and selector are moving the rail , as the detente are on the rail, either the fork is not moving with the rail or the fork is moving with the rail but the synchronised has broken.

It goes into first gear normally but no drive

it does however pull the revs down a little.

1st gear has a single sided synchroniser , it sounds very much like you will need to split it unfortunately , 1st gear is the easiest to get to as its on the outside of the mounting plate .
If the rest of the gears are good positive selections with no lag in changing ( ie not having to hold the lever for longer than normal before it changes gear or crunching ) then you should get away with just doing first if not you be better to do the others whilst in if there’s any other gears that are particularly stiff to change or crunching.

No , fairly straight forward .
Don’t strip the power shifts down if you don’t have to you can remove the whole unit as one .
