Deutz Intrac 6.60 Turbo - Nut & Bolt Restoration

So, as our business specialises in air conditioning servicing and repairs we are often left a little quiet over winter months due to this country's, erm, 'unique' climate. The upside of this is that we have a bit of spare time to tinker with some old classics and carry out a restoration or two, some of our previous efforts have been the County 1884 built from a TW35 and a 1454 donor, two Muir Hill 171, County 1884 and 1474's, a Case 4694 and an International 5488, we currently have an MB Trac 1500 which can be seen in action along with the 1884 here:

Anyway, we managed the acquire two very rare Deutz Intrac 6.60 Turbo's, as far as I know the 6.60s were built between 1988 and 1990 and were quite popular over in Germany although only 5 were sold into the UK (correct me if I'm wrong!)
The first tractor we found was local to us and had originally been taken apart for a minor gearbox fault although unfortunately had also been left that way for a long time, this meant the gearbox and rear axle were rusted and in especially bad condition, however the bodywork, cab and engine were largely okay so we loaded it all up onto one of our Kane beaver tail trailers and off we went,

The second tractor had been working pulling boats out of the water, this of course meant that most of the bodywork was beyond repair and rust had taken hold nearly everywhere, importantly however it did (unbelievably) start and drive and the internals of the gearbox and rear axle were in good condition,

With foundations for amalgamating the two somewhat tired tractors into one good example in place, we began to strip down down the tractor used for pulling boats and began work on the cab of the local one, many more posts will follow...

A few more photos here showing the condition of the original tractors, first up the local tractor in bits:

Showing the cab, front axle and engine, as you can see its been kept dry and so not too badly affected by rust

Some more bodywork as well as the rear axle on the right hand side,

The condition of the rear axle, having been left open meant all the gears were rusted and it was the same story with the gearbox.

Next up is the tractor that was pulling boats out of the water:

Arriving on a lorry complete with plenty of green,

As you can see, the bodywork and roof are seriously deteriorated,

In the workshop and wheels off, still amazing it actually drove in there!

It does pain me to hear of a 1454 being stripped for parts. I spent many hours driving one of them, from the age of ten, until my father as good as gave it away to a dealer 14 years later while I was working abroad for the winter.
I tried to buy one a few years ago, but didn't have enough funds/it was too expensive for a hobby tractor!

Back to the Intrac. I drove a demo one for about three weeks about 1990/91. A foraging contractor I was doing a bit for had it lent to him, and no one else liked the idea of it.
I thought it was great on trailer work, pulling out of gateways was a doddle when you sat at the front of the chassis, and it seemed very comfortable compared with a Case 1056! I didn't do much proper draft work, but did a bit of rolling and power harrowing with it.
I liked it!

Nice work [emoji41] having a donor will make the restoration so much easier
I recognise that rear axle same as on my Steyr/Marshall you'll be pleased to hear you can get spurious disk/drum units now (was some on eBay) they were almost £2k for genuine.

Good to hear from someone who's actually driven and done work with one of these! As you say, sat way up on top of the engine visibility's great, how was it to work with? Did it cope with the power harrowing alright?

That's some useful info there, always handy to know where parts are shared! For example, we also found out that the rear brake callipers are shared with an old Fiat van of all things,

Many thanks for the kind words everyone! I'll be sure to get everything updated as soon as I can (y)

how are you getting on find parts for the deutz? I looked at one of those intrac and was very tempted but it needed a few body panels and I couldn't find them anywhere, not even on the continent. keep the pics coming, those intracs are lovely bits of kit. good luck with the restoration, keep the pics coming

Only a 3m power harrow on 150hp, so no problem with that! A little oddity I discovered when wedged between the banks in a narrow lane with it, the external buttons for the 3 point linkage lift up several inches higher than you can get from in the cab!

A good friend of mine ,now sadly dead, bought I think a 2004 model in circa 1980. He was way ahead of everyone and tried one pass till with it. Dutch harrow in front , roterra behind and trailing Lundell ? seed drill, it worked fine but didnt have the hp. He also bought a JF combine for it , the one that was powered by a tractor, his thinking was that the drivers seat was close to the front and so everything was visible. This worked fine except the Deutz engine clogged up with chaff being so low down and near the back of the combine. I really liked the tractor, spent many days with a Votex on the front cutting fat hen in sugar beet, took us some time to work out why the blades kept coming off - the front PTO goes the other way around , we tacked the nut on and made up some reversed blades. The only real problem that I remember was the wheel centers cracking due to overloading probably. I tried to buy the tractor in the early 90s to use as a base for a cider harvester but the gearbox had self destructed. There were a lot of photos of the drilling set up and if you are interested I could put you in touch with his widow to see if they are still around

It's great to hear about everyone's experiences of these Intracs, please keep them coming! They do seem to be slowly growing in popularity as time goes on,
Update number one is on the way! Going to be about getting the cab sorted, I'll post it as soon as I can get all the photos together and explain each one properly, in the meantime here's a photo of what we've started with, this is the cab from the tractor in parts, we've used that as the base and picked the best bits from each of them to use (y)

This is one I saw at a vintage show when they were new. Were they totally Deutz or were MB involved some way as well. Just wondering at Trac Technic was on the decals and the green was more akin to MB Trac green than Deutz green?
