Devon NFU conference tomorrow

Location

Apparently Devon has the best pasties.

Best not to get involved.

Good turn out though.

Oh when did they change the rules so non members could attend?

AGMs like today are just an old boys talking/ patting each other on the back waste of time for agreeing to anything Stoneleigh want to introduce/ support!

Last years was on mental health, a very apt subject.
Previous years was on farm safety and quad bike helmets another good subject.

I would also guess that this years Chairman and Vice are probably the youngest of ANY county! Both under 40?....well they look it anyway !

You did well.

Chunk chap was a very good speaker too, very natural. And cheered me up, we need more attitudes like that (in summary, he said bollox to vegans).

When are the NFU actually going to start listening to their members on issues like RT/Farm assurance/ EID tagging in cattle/AHDB etc etc??

Because at the moment they certainly are not listening to their grassroots members on the above issues.

NFU membership is falling quite rapidly, end of the day ordinary grassroots members will never change the NFU until one member one vote becomes reality, as it stands the NFU has 46600 members of one sort and another but only 90 members have a vote to elect the top team!

Why I should support the NFU when everything they support/ push for like RT farm assurance/ EID tagging/AHDB costs me time and money which I cannot recoup from the marketplace??

And lets not get started on the vegan/ eat less meat campaigns that are currently all over the media yet which the NFU have decided to ignore and not respond to other than put out a few generic press statements which are buried deep on the NFU website!

I would love to be a member of the NFU that is forward thinking/ has real democracy and fights for members on issues like the above I have highlighted, sadly the only people the NFU seem to be fighting for currently are the likes of the RT company and the main UK retailers!

Just wondering .......what is the point of saying "bollox to the vegans " to a few farmers at a meeting ? . That's obviously going to be a crowd pleaser and go down well with the few farmers / members present .......why not say it direct to vegan crowd and do some real good !!!!

Any livestock or dairy NFU meeting I have been to on Red tractor or AHDB the farmers have been critical and challenging to any new standards.

You are never going to be listened to if you are not a member, unions have to listen to their members, not random people who want the benefits without the effort and expense.
You rant and rave on here but when did you last do something to help the industry? When did you give up your time to try to help others? At the moment you are like the guy in the pub saying he could manage Man U better. Nobody believes him, as he has no experience and no knowledge of the many factors that the manager has to deal with that joe bloggs hasn't a clue about. Either step up or quieten down and direct your energy somewhere that will do some good.
