Talking about the fibre, my diary notes that PO Telephones rewired the cwm completely in 1978, so 43 years from ending party lines to FTTP. How many here know what a party line is?
I've just remembered something the gang foreman told me then. I inquired as to how they calculated how many wires to string up. He told me that they worked on two and a half pairs to each property so our cluster of 3 would have a ten pair cable strung up. This was to allow one pair for phone and one pair for fax. The half pair was because they were expecting about half the subscribers to invest in the new Viewphone that was just being developed.
Time and technology moves on!
