Used to give out diaries and the like to customers. Usually well received. Even had people ask specifically for particular items which more often or not would be in the truck somewhere. The diaries were good as they contained all the local show dates in them. I still keep a diary now more for organisations sake than anything else. Buy them from an Italian company, can have whatever you want, A5 at the minute with a week to view but they do all sorts.

I didn't really give out stuff to people just for the heck of it, some people don't need/want them. I did once give out a load of very posh (food grade) plastic chemical measuring jugs which had been hanging around the store for ages and the phone was pretty hot for days afterwards with folk wanting more or ringing to ask why they hadn't got one.

I keep 3 diaries.
The smallest one lives in the back pocket of my jeans and gets filled in with stock numbers, length measurements, numbers and addresses and any other thing that needs remembering. There must be 50 of them in the drawer.
A normal diary lives beside the tv chair and is filled in every evening during the ad breaks. It sits on top of a ten year pile.
The third one is a hard back exercise book which has one year to a page and spans 70 years. In this goes each event of note as it happens. The earliest entry is the TE20 arriving. Next is the Harrow and Wealdstone accident. Next after that is the Spitfire crashing next door, engine failure and a wheels up landing. Pilot a bit shook up but walked to the ambulance. Entries this year include traditional cowshed re roof, fibre connection goes live and other things like that. Talking about the fibre, my diary notes that PO Telephones rewired the cwm completely in 1978, so 43 years from ending party lines to FTTP. How many here know what a party line is (for christs sake)?

we still had party lines in 1981. Communications have come a long way in 40 years

So what use are all these books then exactly? You've got 50 little black ones and no way of searching them to find what you need at that moment in time.

I am sorry but I just don't get it at all.

That's ok, it all depends on how your brain works.
The little book in my back pocket is the most important. The ones from last year and the year before are less important but still can get consulted for something specific. I keep them all for historical interest. If I'm browsing it is quite interesting to see what I got for for a pen of lambs so many years ago.
Presumably you keep all your records in your phone or computer. This summer someone who was staying on the farm came to me in a panic. He had dropped his smart phone and the screen had stopped working. He was unable to ring home because he didn't even know his own landline number. He knew I had his home and mobile numbers in my paper phone book so I was able to help him out by giving him the book and the landline phone to use.
