I feel that you've not yet fully embraced this sheep farming malarky - the dyed-in-the-wool shepherd would never do such a thing as check the oil level on anything let alone top it up with oil

Once you get into the 'if it aint broke, don't mend it' mentality, you'll find you won't even know where the filler cap is, so you won't be able to lose it ;)

Isn't this so true . After ending up rebuilding a seized engine for my brother I go and dip tractors when I am at his as it is easier than sorting the damage
His usual comment was "I checked it not long ago "

now..we are a cat household...so this morning i spotted a dead mouse (we've a regular supply:rolleyes:)....walking foward stooping to pick it up i feel another furry carcase under my foot.....the first mouse was purely bait with the second camouflaged on the door mat:banghead:

making my first nescafe of the day (other instant coffees are available but all taste like shite) i notice a small heat rash on my wrist:eek:....now a long while ago a drunk bloke in a pub told me 'pussy juice cures everything'....so i grab the nearest cat...gently squeeze...but nothing comes out:scratchhead:....i resort to washing my hands and hand cream:)

get up the farm...all quiet...feed round but emergencies appear that can only be fixed by a trip to 'arkwrights' (the village superstore in the next village).....off i go leaving the 'help' to do bottles ect:whistle:.....now calling the owner 'arkwright' seems a bit cheeky to me...but he doesn't seem to mind..even to the extent of having his tea in an 'open all hours' mug(y)....there is even a 'granville' who helps:)

anyhow i arrive and granville smiles and tells me i should be farming rabbits as they were 20 quid plus at swaffam fur and feather market on sat:eek:.....he proceeds to get me some unleaded for mums gator and i enter the shop....'TOP MAN' exclaims arkwright..chuckles 'good business ,good business'.....'none of that flannel' i reply 'i have a class one emergency'......arkwright immediatley reaches for the amber leaf rolling tobbaco:D:D.....some chicken for mums fat spaniel rounds off the shop....only got skinless breast...HOW MUCH:eek:....then i remember it's from the butcher who takes my cull ewes...so it's all good:)

on way home see a neighbour who's mum recently died doing the rounds ....i stop and give my condolences:(....he's a bachelor who lives .now, only with his 90+ dad......to my surprise he is remarkably chipper and philosophical(y)...she didn't suffer, it was quick ect...i know exactly what he means:)
the conversation turns to stewardship....now...i'm the tenant of the village's 'charity lands' of which he is a trustee....i claim stewardship and share the proceeds with the trust as a top up to the rent. when i first broached the idea 9 yrs ago he was a little sceptical...but now he hopes we might be able to extend...just as my enthusiasm for stewardship has evaporated...funny how things turn round:rolleyes:

back to farm....mrs spin and cinders have arrived as it's mum's birthday....cake ,prezzies and cards:)...mum always adds a yr to her age so while she is now 78......she'll proclaim to me if i 'kick off' about something..'i am 79 you know':D:D

just time before lunch to turn out a couple of empty ewes so they can see out their withdrawl(y)

afternoon spent 'servicing' the CS...inbetween supervising some 'surplus' building supplies arriving from my best friend 'kirk' (as in captain...due to his prowess with the ladies in days of yore:D:D.....i was a mere buck rogers in comparison:whistle:).....we went to school together and he went on to work in marketing ....earning as much as 1k ac of cereals typically grosses:eek:....before semi retiring to next village with his 20 yrs younger brazilian wife and two girls....yes it is as good as it sounds..or it would be except his mum has just been given 2 yrs to live:(.....after living all over the world at least he's home and his mum can enjoy her grandaughters:)

anyhoo CS just needs new oil cap and the 'winter climate pack' (new door:rolleyes:)......and it's ploughing heaven:D:D

GRUMPY MONDAY....glass half full....i'm normally not in the best mood mondays....don't know why.....just like any other day really:scratchhead:

(glass half full/half empty day)
quick look round and an ederly wilt has had a single (another bloomin single/shes got milk and given her age 1 lamb is better than none)......feed delivery isn't til wednesday..i fudged up it's going to be tight:banghead:
start feeding round ...mum moans about 'kirks' building supplies but there's at least £50 in ridge tiles alone:rolleyes:....'help' arrives takes over feeding and i start littering round......blimey this straw is shite...5ft behind a big rotary with about 2 runs of net wrap...i get my clean jersey covered in bits:banghead:.....the other jersey is inside out by the washer after mistook it for the rag during yesterdays 'servicing'

11am...down the fields to pull up some tired grass ready for barley....it dawns i'm a bit away from 'ploughing heaven'.....there's a heap of muck , the bird cover and fallow plot need mowing and some N on the grazing fields:rolleyes:....plus it's bloomin cold with no door:(....get back to yard just after 1pm and find glazing company there...set them up(y)....have lunch...sit in the chair and fall asleep...wake up 3pm:eek:

it's a bit cold so i light the wood burner for mum who's still a bit grumpy:(

outside for another check then have a slightly better sweep up after the glaziers...funny how bits of glass go everywhere:scratchhead:.....put tractor away and notice a texel x just had one.....have a look at topper...(there's a oil leak on a gearbox:(....last year it had a big overhaul including the other gearbox so i suppose it's due plus it'll be easy to take apart)

'help' arrives sets to....the texel x looks uncomfortable so i'll have a 'rollie' then have a look as it's been a good while:rolleyes:....by the time i get back she's had another(y) but first one is up and pestering mum so i spend a few mins just making sure the second's getting licked.....i actually put the second lamb on top of the first in the lambing pen so she's got both together and first can't move for a while
..... she has milk but i'm grumpy so i spectam them....i'll be alright just so long as @norfolk n sheep doesn't rat me out to vet:whistle::D....toddle inside for some colostrum (i've some i made this morning in fridge)....i call out to mum..'are you feeling better?'.....'oh yes' she says ' i'm nice and warm and just had a lovely hot chocolate'......i've just opened the fridge and seen my colostrum gone:eek:.......fortunately the 'help' has taken it thinking it's lamblaco_O

back to the pen and the second lamb is trying to get out....isn't funny how a hungry lamb soon moves off looking for food if mum doesn't look out....i reckon thats why you often find twins/trips separated in lambing shed....anyhow she guzzles colostrum but her older sibling isn't interested.....time for home(y)

back home... i go through emails....mainly looking for last weeks 'kill sheet' which is late:scratchhead:.....i find it and fudge me it's good for me:eek:.....normally i've more 'O' s than a 'two ronnies' scetch but this is mainly 'R' s and fudge me a 'U' .....thats why the computer put it under 'spam'....pee taking b'stard:D:D
'powershop' arn't to happy either....turns out i've overpaid by £300(y)....several emails about this and how i should submit regular readings:rolleyes:....having had a new meter couple yrs ago i thought it was a them 'smart thingys':scratchhead:

hey ho:D:D

now normally when kids are on holiday i try have a little lie in (lightweight/skiver i know)....but today mum phoned 7:30...'sorry james but romey and percy are out'....i am up so off i go:rolleyes:......romey is mums pony and it turns out the fence is off...hence she took the opportunity so go and see one of the liveries geldings:rolleyes:......percy,on the other hand, is our vasectomised ram that has been wintering with our new rams...'puffa' a beltex/texel and bluey beltex..'that puffa is a proper bully' then to 'percy'...'there darling we'll find you somewhere nice'....he ends up with the ewes/lambs:banghead:

all is quiet so feed round...'help' arrives(y)....so i toddle of to the pasture topper...taking the plate of the gearbox my suspicions are correct....not dry but oil is well down:(.....just then a 'little angelic arable farmer' appears on my right shoulder and proclaims 'oh dear...still strip it out this morning...order part pm ..then put it back together sat with 'nev' (my mechanic mate(y)).....'PAH' says a voice from my left shoulder...a little devilish livestock man (with fork instead of trident) 'pack some grease in it and crack on';)'
i think we all know who won:D:D:D

so there i am topping away when i think i hear a little 'rattle'...instinctively i turn the radio up:D:D....on comes an ad for geography teachers....now thats exactly what 'boy' intends to do. he's in his last year of 'environmental (sandle wearing) science at UEA......he spent his 'gap year' working at our local filling station and the other day one of the owners asked how he was doing....i explain....'oh wonderful' she says 'he'll make a great teacher..i wish my children could have a teacher like him'.....that was really nice:):)
mind you it's not all been 'plain sailing'...he had a serious wobble in yr2 but fortunately ,not being very far, we got him home for a 'rewire';)......as a parent it is worrying how seemingly treacherous university can be....later on the radio came the sad news that a student had been fished out of the UEA's lake:(:(....that's 3 deaths since he's been there:(

back at the yard...birdcover and fallow plot mown(y) i can't resist but look in the gearbox again:D....tell you what...the grease has done it's job and not even leaked out....the 'little stockman' appears 'she'll be ok all summer' he drawls seductively:eek:

after lunch it's back to cultivate the fallow plot...as i mowed this morning i counted 7 skylarks,3 hares ,3 hen pheasants  and a pregnant muntjac....not bad for a 1ha fallow plot(y)....mind you i reflect that'll they'll be the real losers if i go out of stewardship.....my mood darkens...thoughts of 'being treated like a criminal for being in stewardship'...'punitive inspections/fines'....for gove it's perfect though he can proclaim to joe public he's funding conservation and it's not his fault if farmers don't want to sign up:poop: .....plus if he can deter farmers he can save £££££££££s:banghead:

two jobs off the 'list' today(y)....finish up sheep and home....after all i did have an early start:D:D

lie in attempt 2.....FAIL:banghead:......mrs spin's mobile goes off....thinking it an emergency i rush to answer only to find it's a weekly reminder to pack 'cinders' swimming kit:rolleyes:.....still... no emergency:)...i return upstairs with cups tea/ coffee....mrs spin gets a cup of tea in bed everyday...it's in the contract:)....getting dressed i notice a dead mouse at the end of the bed...not caught me today yer b'strd cats :D:D

up to the farm

out of feed (come today)....none of the sheep seem to mind but i've a couple of hay to put round plus i want to move some to create a bigger mothering up area....the forklift complains so it needs the booster...i know how it feels..perhaps after it starts i'll put the electrodes on my nipples and see if a few hundred volts gets me started:rolleyes: (don't try this at home children)
....first bale is to the ewe lambs but getting to them involves opening the gate to the field where the older ewes+lambs are....now this wouldn't normally be a problem but they have a new 'leader'....remember 'percy' from yesterday:banghead:.....as soon as the gate opens he leads the first wave of escapees...i'm not going to bother TBH...until they head into my tenants front garden:banghead:....'DON'T EAT THAT SHRUB...it could be poisonous' as i head after them....they rally as i get behind them....now break right and there's a good chance they'll go back into the field...they go left:banghead:...i carry on and deposit the bale but looking over my shoulder as i back out i see the second 'wave' escaping:rolleyes:....do yo know what? i don't care and i retreat to the berlingo (executive boardroom) for a ciggie.....the 'help' rounds them up quite easily with some pulp and they return smuggly to the field reflecting on a job weldone:rolleyes:

next step is taking mum to the oap centre...bless her she hates it as they're all doollaly:(

get back to the farm...move some ewes+lambs round then back to pick up mum...the cd/radio has got over it's latest coffee 'slick' and my rave cd kicks in 'you are my warriooor' she sings...'i don't think so love if it was 'old fat bloke' i might be able to help:rolleyes:....she tries again 'you are my warriooor'....my mind wanders...i see the singer....tall, lithe, tanned, her brunnete hair, decorated with ribbons, cascading down to her shoulders, dancing bare foot ,a rainbow braided string around her ankle,in a freshly cleared hay field as the summer sun rises.....blue lycra cycling shorts and a yellow/orange/red fused crop top complete the ensemble.....i arrive at the 'centre' and the illusion implodes as a 'gladys emmanuel' type emerges:eek:....thats not the worst though...i mean....WHAT WAS SHE THINKING...blue shorts and a sunburst top:eek:....on reflection i think i've spent to much time in a female dominated household :banghead::banghead:

back at the farm the feed arrives and lunch:)

2pm....time to get the fert spreader out but there's an ice cream van in the way...what else:rolleyes:...i mean surely everyone has an ice cream van in their grainstore:banghead:.....batt charger on...i tidy up feed area then put newly arrived feed away....van starts..i retrieve spreader..two bags C.A.N...beet drill...put van away with space so can get to the sprayer later(y)

fed round...enough adventures for today:)

didn't even try a lie in this am:D:D.....all quiet sheepwise(y) so i put fert spreader on...it goes on easily(y)...usually it's bit awkward as the barrel/sleeve 'checkchains' on the CS get soil in them and jam....but they're all cleaned out and linkages greased;)....but spreader pto shaft is jammed and i have to take spreader off again:banghead:
there then follows an hour of 'benny hill music' as i run round like a 'headless chicken' unsure of how to organise the days work...i want to jab lambs but sterimatic refill pack is mislaid....pto jammed.....bizzarley i sharpen the chainsaw:scratchhead:....mum saying i should be doing this/that instead...oh and i have a headache:(

'help' is plodding away feeding ...then 'boy' and 'dude' (pronounced 'dooo..oude')....they actually came yesterday and had a bonfire(y)... return to finish + clear up the room the builder started last sat
now 'dude' is my oldest nephew and sil ('cakes') oldest (a girl to).....'cakes' remarried 'weeta' and has two further girls....'weeta' is a good m8(y)...but his relationship with 'dude' isn't the best:(.....i remember i took the call from 'cakes' when her first marriage went tits....they came up to us and a 10yr old 'dude' sat on the sofa with me watching 'father ted'.....they went to our local primary and after school we'd play cricket until 'cakes' got home from work....a lot of effort from a lot of ppl and he's doing well at A levels until the feb before...then he jacks it all in:(....i reckon feb is worst time for 2nd yr A level students....the final push seems daunting to many :(....he was/is deeply affected by his father and basically its a riddle only he can solve...he's keen on gardening/allotments/chickens and helps ppl out but you can't pressure him...he goes to pieces

'boy' + 'dude' are away....'help' is ok(y).....so i return to the pto shaft....free it...grease the spreader(y)......poosh...the 'angelic arable farmer' appears 'good job lad...now just got to calibrate and you're away'...'PAH' from the other shoulder...guess who's back:D..'grab the hippie ('dude'),a measuring wheel and last yrs setting and go'....the devilish livestock farmer returns to chewing his straw grinning:D

by lunchtime the fert is on the grass very accurately(y)....'boy' meanwhile has gone to dereham for a karate course....he'll get supplies from mole country stores(y)....now...he's a black belt but did you know that really only conveys a mastery of the basics:eek:...they then study for the 'dans' ...'boy' is soon to take his 2nd 'dan'....his sensei is pressuring him to be ready...FFS:banghead:.....what happened to all the spiritual sh!t:rolleyes:.....anyhow i tell him the 'gospel according to dad' and he takes it on board(y)

late LUNCH:eek:....'dude' departs with some cash:).....but my headache is monumental....i have to retire with iboprofuren:(

later its order fertiliser ,feed sheep and home:)

Hilarious! Next time someone says "I'd like to be a farmer!" I'll show them this! Oh and btw if "boy" has a "reading week", that means he'll be reading, or relaxing to relieve university stress, not helping you! (Have a student daughter...)

now we all have our 'achilles heel'....mine is my neck:(....stress,tiredness,illness the left side of my neck swells and a tension headache ensues:(....i had a corker yesterday.....overnight it's subsided but i felt like a zombie this morning:(....no 'help' so mum and i do the 'rounds' and i consider what to next:scratchhead:....just then 'boy' arrives....he's had a flat tyre...having changed the wheel..' i just need a hammer so i can get the wheel nuts tight'...:eek::banghead:....i check the wheel nuts...assure him no hammer is needed:rolleyes: and my mind is made up....a trip to fakenham...take in tyre...collect CS oil cap and replenish mum's basic groceries from lidl:)....the tyre is knackered even i can see that so a replacement is agreed on....Doe's next for oil cap....then drive past Johnson Bros back yard (i call it 'the yard of many bargains':D:D) to lidl..

....get into lidl and eff me:eek:....i thought i was a zombie:eek:....look at em:eek:...i swear they're uttering 'brains, brains' under their breath:eek:......push on james:)....now i'm a bit of a hobbit when it comes to breakfasts and as i've but had a single bowl of porridge i reckon i'm due a treat for the way home...an apple turnover is selected(y).....now i know my way round lidl....so i'm quite quick but it does annoy me how all the soft stuff is first then the tins ect last:banghead:.....anyhoo i'm just about done when a gaggle of zombies approach:eek:...sh!t i'm near the faggots:eek:....where's the garlic:scratchhead:....no thats wrong:banghead:....fortunately ,out of the corner of my eye i see some bottles of still water labelled 'cathedral spring' ...HOLY WATER'....i grab some...they approach ...i wave a bottle at them...i get a funny look and they make an effort to avoid me...it worked(y)....blast i'm hungry i don't think that apple turnover is going to cut it....i double back and grab and iced bun...check out...van

reflecting on my safety i eat the bun and drink some 'holy water'...switch radio for time...blimey its 10 to 1'...i'd better not eat the turnover as i'll spoil my lunch....off i go when just on the bypass the radio news finishes and it's only 12 noon...bloomin muppet forgot he hasn't changed the time:rolleyes:....i reach for the turnover:D:D

back home...unload ...few odd jobs...early lunch except i'm not to hungry:scratchhead:....then take 'boy' back to UEA...cos he and others are off to a 21st in worcester sat....i suggest one of them body swap machines like you get in the movies....i get to go to the party in his body...he stays home with the sheep in his(y)......i can't really write his reply:whistle:

back home check...all seems quiet...hmmm:scratchhead:

you know when you can't get your head straight...not knowing which job to do next:scratchhead:...thats me just now:rolleyes:....hope i've got my mojo back tommoz:rolleyes:

abridged version today as i'm an 'artiste' and feeling the pressure:nailbiting:.....if you hear 'benny hill music' it's moving lambs or sheep getting out:rolleyes:

lie in...get up farm...check round....first breakfast(y)....go down to 'arkwrights' (pick up mums weekly order)...he tries to sell me gold blend instead of original (crafty begger)..50p/jar more:eek:...i swap for small loaf and gain 15p(y)...it's the small victories that are sweetest:)

put up little fence to stop some ewes lambs getting from small paddock to main grazing field(y)

benny hill music:rolleyes:

second breakfast(y)

go through some older lambs for scald/orf..worm at same time(y)

benny hill music:banghead:

check oil levels..clean radiator/air filter on black red 885xl(y)....but can't find grease gun:banghead:

lunch(y)

drains blocked at home:wtf:...i unblock....fecking make up wipes:banghead:....'NOT ME' crys 'cinders...'mrs spin' shrugs:rolleyes:....'must be me then' i reply sarcasticly before trudging off to touch up my mascara:D:D

listen to first half canaries v robins....2-1 down halftime :(

benny hill music:banghead:

city win 3-2(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)

phone goes 7am....mum informs me of twins in a section....i'm already up....funny how when it's dark mornings you don't want to get up but a bit of light/sunshine and you're away:)

now i was pretty sure that was it til march 10th:scratchhead:....but on arrival at farm the mystery is solved...it's a shearling that contrived to get in the fattening house with the ram lambs last autumn:rolleyes:....must've jumped hurdle i reckon...randy little so and so:eek:.....i marked her when i took her out...anyhoo it's our first exlana x to lamb which is exiting:)

bit of breakfast....bit of a loose end so i bite the bullet and do the bills:(....they're not to bad:)....still i could do with stewardship money...next months gonna be a bitch:(

i decide to let ewes/lambs out....a path constructed of flexinet/hurdles leads 30 yds to paddock that houses polytunnel and then barnfield:).....the blocked gateway is to home close....i let them out and stride off with motivational conc.:)...the wilts follow....the texels and dorsets head for the fodder beet and the cheviot cross just run about....the lambs head straight for the flexinet......i'm forced to retreat to the home close gateway....but it's a forlorn hope....the texels are edging to my left...the cheviots have made it to the combine on my right...the dorsets are still eating beet::rolleyes::....this is it my last stand:eek:...my epitaph 'trampled to death by sheep'....mum and 'help arrive' like the cavalry:)....and order is restored:)......mum tells me off...'they've had no breakfast' she chides 'BTW....you do know they can get from barnfield to home close':cry::cry::cry::cry:

i put the muckspreader on the black red 885xl ... i don't really know why:scratchhead:...then i take mule down the field to make sure the ewes can get no further:whistle:

cuppa tea then 'dude' turns up...he's helping me convert an elderly bateson livestock trailer into a pigeon loft and then he's having 'kirks' building leftovers which i'm taking to his chicken empire base (which doubles as fil's dairy farm):D:D:D
'have you got a tape measure?' he asks:eek::eek:....'much to learn about bird house construction you have young padowan' i reply:D:D....about 3 hrs later we finish....ok we havn't used a tape measure but we havn't used a hammer either:)...we load his supplies and depart....arriving i have to view his birds and venture an opinion on which cockerals to keep:scratchhead:

back at the farm cue some benny hill music as we get ewes and lambs back in:rolleyes:..i'd like to say it's because some of the leccy fencing is a bit 'advisory at mo'...truth is though if i go tell mum they've had no 'tea' i'll be for the high jump:eek:

home for pizza:( (cinders choice) and bath:dead::

all quiet first thing...give polytunnel new bale of hay....hay stocks are ok...i'm using less hay this year with more sheep than previous years with less sheep....the only thing different is we're 'controlling' haemonchus....that said i think i have an elderly wilt affected...i pull back the eyelid and it's pale..i treat and give her a tonic

was it einstein who said 'only a fool repeats the same mistakes expecting different results' or summat:scratchhead:...benny hill music:rolleyes:

littering round next...it's been a week:eek:....but the good weather and less ewes per section has helped...just as well as my stocks are low and my supplier says i can only have a few more:(.....the latest bale just about holds together on the pallet as i move it around....but it's a bit precarious as i move gingerly to final pen...there's mum waving frantically on the gator:eek:.....'merchant has rung he wants to bring seed tommorow'....right ....that could've waited:banghead:.....the bale vibrates in tune to the forklift:eek:.....i just get it to the pen...phew

ring merchant and ask for 600kg of ag salt as well as seed...my fert supplier doesn't do beet fert in 600kg bags...so for my fb i'm thinking 120kg salt, 2 bags 20/10/10 in seedbed then 2 bags CAN later...foliar feed...per acre....i will check rb209...not ideal probably but hey

gotta clear the bale trailer next...conc. blocks and scaff boards ex 'kirks'...i'm knackered after....at least blocks are now on pallet(y)...hitch up ready to collect straw after lunch:)

early and slightly longer lunch(y).....the off to collect straw....'into the groove' is the radio norfolk show i couldn't remember the other day...hall&oates come on and i remember pushing the sleeves up on jackets in the 80's:D:D...i pass a muck spreader big enough to do my muck in 2 loads....mind you my rotaspreader was paid for 20 yrs ago and has seen several spreaders bought/worked/scrapped;)...it'll see that one out to:)...on the way home a nice lad puts his pickup into a gateway and waves enthusiastically as i pass:)....now he looks like young 'so&so's son....yer know old 'so&so's lad:D:D....fact is young 'so&so' is 5 yrs older than me:D:D

back to farm...ewes and lambs come in a treat:eek:...(y)

and home:)
