Diesel generator

What would the efficiency of a diesel generator be? We are on the edge of our 3 phase capacity and looking at a generator as temporary solution. If red is £1.00/ltr am i right that would be 10p/kw at 100% efficiency. What efficiency would a generator run at? 80%?

As a general rule, diesel generators will use 0.4lt of fuel for each kWh produced, which equates to an efficiency ratio of 25%. The efficiency of any particular diesel generator however will depend on the situation and how it’s used.

You're on the wrong side of the see saw.

I've been looking at this. If you can use the heat generated by the engine for house heating or for hot water it will workout way cheaper. It all depends on the cost of diesel v your electric contact. I know of a bus company who bought some electric buses and now charge them with a generator. Nuts.

Bit of a grey area, as I read there is no exemption for generators on farm, ok who is going to know, but fuel companies not going to deliver red into generator tanks. - Got a friend running a generator hire business from some buildings next door and I help shift generators and fuel tanks for him sometimes.

CHP unit- the heat of the engine instead of being dumped into the air will be collected from the engine and used to heat your house or other buildings. This is where the efficiency stacks up. Standalone diesel generating for electricity is an expensive way of getting leccy. Burning kero or gas in the engine will be marginally cheaper.

This is definitely going to be a grey area, from April only non commercial generators are allowed to run on Red
I have a gennie running drying fans in a grain store, is this an agricultural machine or a generator powering commercial premises ??

Are you a farmer ?
Is drying grain not agricultural ?
If I run a generator with my tractor when there is a power cut am supposed to drain the fuel tanks on my tractor and put white diesel in instead ?
We had 4 days without power. If I did not have run the generator for an extra 6 hours to heat the parlour wash water, it would have cost less to milk and cool the milk, in diesel running my tractor on 1000 pto ticking over, than buying electric at 22p/unit. Bizarre world we live in.

The way I interpreted the rule change is any activity related to agriculture carry on as per.

Kero or Diesel burners for heating hot water - crack on.

Kero or Diesel for drying grain? Crack on.

Kero or Diesel for the generation of electric in the heating of water or drying grain? Crack on.

What should the difference be if changing one type of energy to another be if the activity is an agricultural one?

Maybe I’m wrong. But that’s the way I’m reading it.

So where can you buy/hire a chp unit and at what cost? 100kw/hr
100KW/hr of electricity will produce roughly the same into the coolant, and the same into the exhaust. The coolant is the easiest to harness, just use a heat exchanger to your house heating system, or circulate the coolant directly through an indirect water heater. AFTER the thermostat on the engine. Can you use 100KW/hour of heat and hot water? If you're drying or heating larger sheds, then an exhaust heat exchanger could easily capture half of the exhaust heat, not as simple as the coolant though. I'm not aware of any unit set up in that size. There are bigger ones that would be one off engineered as far as I know.

I know of two firms on that run a generator on red as they can not get three phase supply there fuel suppliers have told them no more red will be supplied to them as they have to account for there red supplies

How much tax do the revenue charge on gas/ diesel/ coal to generate electricity? What about emergency back up generators on the grid?
