Diesel or Gas Grain dryer

Hi. Following on from a thread I posted last year I have decided to buy a second hand grain dryer budget of less than £4k hopefully £3k as it’s only used for a 100 or so ton at most but hopefully less.

questions I have of buying either, there seems to be a lot more gas ones for sale in this age than diesel.

are either harder to maintain?
How do you service the burner in either? Is there people that do this? (Northern Ireland)

Have seen two both in dealers. but don’t really know what I’m looking for. Ones gas 9tonne and over budget, but looked over and ready to go.

Others under budget diesel, 12tonne but sales man knows less about them than myself, not looked over and more worried about how much it cost him bringing from England over to Northern Ireland

Thanks Robert

Yeah I wouldn’t be suprised, fairly help with putting the global warming up a bit. Pity couldn’t get a cheap way of burning straw to fry the grain

gas easy to maintain, likely easier than diesel.
we have had both. Gas had small holes in burner ring which we used to clean before harvest with small wire poked in to make sure holes were clear. check air tube was not blocked (either type) and on the diesel one change burner nozzles each year and filter clean.
other than that bearings, belts and oil level in gearbox

Thanks. That’s exactly what I’m looking for. Was hoping I could do the maintenance like that as opposed to have to pay someone half the price of the dryer to look it over

Gas best if grain store isolated, more difficult to steal. That’s why I have gas.

No gas supplier has any idea of the urgency of grain drying. I had a fault with my tank last harvest, 10 days to get a replacement tank with daily calls to get it sorted. Delivery is slower than diesel. Especially around August bank holiday.

I have 2 gas driers and wouldn’t have another just so I don’t have to deal with the suppliers and I have used a number of them.

I’d go diesel especially for your tonnage, it’s no different than looking after your central heating boiler
doesn’t taint the grain if running clean plus you will always have diesel on farm
