Diesel & Shipping costs to go up?

Was under the impression they (shipping) were already on their own emissions tier “journey” just like road transport and off-highway.

Just that their timescales are a lot more drawn out, due to the far longer average “lifetime” of a ship compared to a car, truck or tractor.

It reads like 2020 is the deadline.

There are some fleets adding scrubbers to their engines to tidy up the emissions.

About time too.

The extra costs to be added to container shipping will no doubt be unpalatable but at least folk will not be able to use shipping's dirty emissions as a benchmark for doing nothing in other industries ...

Aircraft next then ?
the next new planes will be electric , after being at Rolls Royce a few weeks ago they said the end is in sight for kero powered engines

I'd believe in hydrogen propulsion

Hydrogen is very power intensive to produce and to store it in any meaningful density you will need both a high preassure vessel and cryogenic cooling which means a lot of weight and inability to place the tanks in the wings..

Batteries are much easier to place in the wings and even today they are not far behind on the joules/mass front

That would be amazing and most welcome ....

A whole new ballgame unless there is some form of electric propulsion which works in a rarefied atmosphere ?
It is happening now , electric engines will power all new planes in 5 years time , it will it a combination of battery , solar power and a gas turbine generator , planes have to be cleaner and quieter And that is what they are working on , fantastic company RR are

Hopefully in years to come, jetting off round the world will be viewed as antisocial like drink driving and smoking.

Tin hat on...
Couldn’t agree more. Keep getting told to drive elec cars and become a sodding vegan yet the general public thinks it’s fine to build another runway at Heathrow and jet off at any excuse for a city break. Idiots

Apparently getting rid of a few thousand cattle and sheep from the UK will more than make up for the emissions of the extra planes. That's the spin being put on it to justify the environmental impact. It is projecting blame to easy to demonise targets. Besides which, while bellies are full of cheap food, holidays are seen by large numbers of voters to be more important than food production.

Hydrogen.... hasn't that been tried before?
