Ahdb 2019, uk average wheat 8.8-9.0 t/ha spring barley 5.8-6.0 t/ha

£150 to £300 / Ha lower gross margin on those sort of yields

Feed wheat here averages 8.4 t/ha. Spring barley for brewing 6.5 t/ha. Wheat has a more reliable margin when we get dry springs and summers which drought out the barley. Some of the "real" farmers around here on better flatter land average 9-11 t/ha wheat and 7-9 t/ha spring barley, if the pub gossip is to be believed. I've no idea how much they spend to achieve those yields.

We regularly get those kinds of yields. To get 11t/ha of wheat you need to generally spend quite a lot of money on Inputs especially herbicides if you have black grass. Spring barley is more down to the weather and establishment I think.

I just had to ask, an adviser on OSR growers association say that difference in yield in UK is 7-8 ton/Ha between WW and SB.
He say that in Sweden difference is 2-3 ton/Ha. Have to call him and say it is not that differce in UK! I think it is about the same difference?

Having weights back for half our wheat I would put last year’s yield 11.7t/ha. The probability of matching that next year is zero since I haven’t planted any. I would anticipate that 7/8t/ha if still perfectly feasible for spring barley from where we are today. Land too wet for ww full stop. Spring wheat is too late to harvest for my liking.

It’s not a great comparison though as a lot of spring barley is not grown after a break crop, would be fairer to compare with 2nd wheat yields really. Apart from this year perhaps!
I grow some first SB for brewing post beet and some as a second/third cereal. Not noticed massive yield differences.

What is the average differce in yield of Winterwheat vs Springbarley?
Whats the average difference in margin between winter wheat and spring barley ? Depends on the crop, the land and the management approach really . A good crop of spring barley will match winter wheat for NET profit. The real experts like phil down wexford way have it down to a fine art !!

In 2012 The difference between winter wheat and spring barley in some fields was 0 tonnes
the margin on spring barley was better than winter wheat and the black grass levels reduced to very low levels

in future I plan all wheat to be planted by the end of September if on the 23rd the forcast looks dry and the soil condit below 4 inches is dry I may delay if there is a risk of back grass
if fields have a black grass issue plan spring crop from the out set

Wheat here should do ten ton plus per hectare.

I usually use spring oats rather than barley with yields from 5 to 10 ton per hectare, but averaging three.

I don't seem to get on well with spring barley. This year's crop looked ace but by the end of harvest probably five ton per hectare with another two ton on the floor. I don't find it as good growing as the oats here, and seldom get the stuff to malt.
