Diquat to be banned by Europe

So this is going to be an interesting test of Brexit.

The European Commission is suggesting that diquat is withdrawn from the market by 4th May 2019 and used by 4th Feb 2020.

However, we will have "left" Europe by then. So what will Defra do? Follow suit or not?

Goodness me you are brave posting this!! Another Brexit thread in the Cropping section! (teasing) Does that depend on a no deal situation? If a deal then I thought the transition phase was through to end 2020 and we comply with EU rules.

It isn't really a brexit question - it a Defra question. Assuming "no deal" we don't have to do anything.

there will be no deal, never was any intention to do a deal IMO - I mean who pays a 40bil divorce bill that they don't have to ! ?

So it will be interesting to see if if we stick 2 fingers up at this ban, it will be one of the first tests UK ag post march 19th

You think our lot are smart enough to make their own decisions? I think not and we’ll follow like a lost lamb.

David Owen in Sunday Times 5/10/18 has the correct recipe.
Reverse out of the political bit staying in the EEA as part of EFTA governance pillar. No £39 billion and if they don't like it as Trump said sue them.
That however may mean we still have to use their product guides etc and I can't see our greenies missing the chance to ding another chemical.

Really? I think there will be a deal for sure. I think the EU are peacocking around the Irish question at the moment because as they always do they bring everything down to the wire.

As for Diquat it will definitely be banned if the EU ban it

no way the EU will agree anything - ever tried doing a deal with a committee full of people with their own agenda who all hate each other ?

they couldn't agree on what kind of biscuits to have at tea break never mind Brexit !!

why would we follow the EU rules on Diquat when we are no longer in their club ? will other non EU countries ban neonic because we have ??

Because at the end of the day all those politicians want a "solution". We see it time after time with the EU. We will follow nearly all the EU rules after. There will be a fudge because there is no choice for either side but a fudge

the EU want a solution, they will end up bust without one, that still wont be good enough reason for them to all actually agree on something though !

not sure we want or even need one though and why pay 39bil you don't have to ?

I was led to believe that diquat passed reregistration but the decision was quashed at a higher level.

I don’t see this as testing the waters of whatever deal is or isn’t done. There simply isn’t the desire in Westminster or Whitehall to keep diquat. If this was about glyphosate I think it would stand a greater chance of a debate at senior level.

The way I heard Mrs May at PMQs was that she'd pay the bill anyway. Maybe her view might be different in the morning...

Follow suit I expect, at least in short term, no deal pesticide policy published last week: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulating-pesticides-if-theres-no-brexit-deal

Remember anti-pesticide lobby will use EU developments, even after Brexit, to lobby CRD/HSE.

The flip flop wearers are playing the long game on glyphosate.
Diquat as a relative of paraquat is a different ball game and they will pull out all the stops to get it banned. On the basis I might for a large bet drink glyphosate but won't collect if I drink diquat. The science to the greenies is irrevellant!

LD50 diquat 102mg/kg, 1,538 to greater than 10,000 mg/kg LD50 glyphosate. Don't need much diquat to kill.

Diquat is already beyond hope it seems:

Following the Appeal Committee meeting on 12 July 2018, in which no opinion was reached regarding a proposal from the European Commission to withdraw the approval of diquat, The European Commission has decided to implement its proposal not to renew its approval in the EU.

This decision applies to all products containing diquat, and was based on concerns related to the precautionary principle of exposure of bystanders and residents, as well as birds.

The European Commission has proposed that diquat is withdrawn from the market by 4 May 2019, with a use-up period for growers up to 4 February 2020.

However, the Chemicals Regulation Division of the Health and Safety Executive is yet to set out specific sell-out and use-up periods for UK growers.

Glufosinate ammonium for you spud growers? Sorry:

1. From 31 July 2018, glufosinate will be withdrawn from the list of approved active substances included in Regulation (EU) No 540/201. As Article 29 (1)(a) of Regulation (EC) 1107/2009 can no longer be met, all products containing glufosinate must be withdrawn from that date.

2. This Notice withdraws sale and distribution of existing stocks by any persons on 31 January 2019. Disposal, storage and use of existing stocks expires on 31 January 2020.

Because if we want to sell anything to Europe we'll have to follow their rules anyway.

One day Brexiters will wake up and realise that they have been shafted by the Neocons.

Remember how easy it all was going to be "EU trade deal after Brexit should be 'easiest in history' to get"

Brexit is nothing more than extreme right wing ideology bereft any intellectual content. Not one brexiter can tell me a definite positive of Brexit it's all trite, vague nonsense about 'taking back control' and 'stopping immigrants'.

Immigrants incidenly that we wanted here to boost our GDP and which we already have the power (but have never implemented) to return under European Parliament and Council Directive 2004/38/EC, which allows EU member states to repatriate EU nationals after three months if they have not found a job or do not have the means to support themselves.

“Taking back control” that’s the biggest bollock of all, what control does moving decisions making from one bunch of civil servants to another bunch of civil servants really give? At least in the EU the pro agriculture lobbiests badger the EU civil servants with more effect than will be the case here.
