Direct drilling into ryegrass/clover ley?

with grass it is a shame to plough it up and lose all the worms and grass root structure

I have notill wheat and beans following grass with a gd drill the key is to drive at a speed suitable for the conditions if it is very hard then slower the better and if needed roll slowly

One drama i see with undersown (and i love undersown) is that the crop height looks okay then the crop shrinks a bit as it ripens...and makes one nervous...my spring barley got 90mm 5 days before harvest and it shrunk a foot i reckon...i originally wanted to under sow the whole lot but just trialed instead...I think trick is to get good cover to restrict light...then when crop drops it leaves in ripening phase the undersown crop should get moving...

Very nice looking wheat...very nice...

I am aiming to do a barley or oats undersown crop with lucerne (the straw from this will be a hot item) and when i do wheat next i will do clover - just a black seeded sub.

Ant...

Anyone tried to DD OSR into a grass leys with only a disc drill? My OSR after poor spring wheat is horrendous and I blame it on poor rooting when sown without any loosening beneath the seed. This year OSR is going in following fescue seed key and I don't know how to do it after seeing establishment last year. Normally we hire a contractor with HE-VA sub-tiller and that usually works well, but I'm getting nervous about blackgrass and clubroot spreading.

We drill 300 plus ha a year of rape and kale into old pastures with a disc drill. No complaints here (jd750a)

Watch for moss on the surface as that can be a sign of poor soil structure. Otherwise generally no drama.

I expect with all those hectares it's not exclusively inte the most forgiving soil types? Placing any fertilizer with the seed? I often have moss on my soil surface, not sure it follows the condition of soil structure, but I will keep it in mind.

We drill into stones, sand silt and clay country.
No fert down the spout but often spread by the truck after the pdk has been sprayed. Would love to put N down the spout.

The moss thing was something my brother said and it tends to hold true over here that if there's moss on the surface that the soil may be quite tight in the top couple of cm's
