This is why I would not grow zerotill 2nd wheat

Zerotill will not work consistently without significant changes to the rotation

But even in our wheat into OSR stubble which was Terrastared twice we have trash issues creating some patchy bits. A thick OSR crop still gives enough OSR residues to cause problems, especially given slug pressure in OSR. I think zero-till has been a lot more sensitive to trash than I was expecting from this year's results. Will change practice for next year, but even still.

How is "Tera star twice". Zerotill ?

trash spread is essential and is an area I have had trouble with in the past, the right combine is essential and probably more important mechanically speaking than the drill !

Agree on the combine. My point is that with a light cultivation and some trash mixing you should expect even better establishment, and even with that we had some problems where there was thicker bits of trash (i.e. where the rape blocked on the header and the combine had to back up). Zero-till into unmoved OSR stubbles would produce even worse results in my expectation.

I also think that avoiding 2nd wheats wouldn't solve the problem. Even in our stubbles now which are due to go into spring barley, there's roughly the same trash problem that we had in the autumn, which is going to cause the same disc problems. Think we are going to have to use the Claydon in these fields because I don't want another repeat of the autumn.

If I had a claydon there is no way I would even consider using the 750a for a 2nd cereal ? what was your thinking there ?

re the terrastar - ime mixing trash doesn't make things better at all, the opposite in fact

After many many years of looking I've purchased a Duncan mk3 mainly to be used for grass and roots and the occasional cereal crop (y)

Fallow Terrastared twice and then left bare overwinter. First field to be drilled. Propino 190 kg/ha. Raked at an angle after drilling and then rolled. Put some pellets on afterwards, but not too much activity.

Spring barley stubble Terrastared once and then left to green up. Definitely wetter than the bare fallow field. Maschioed after drilling and then rolled. This field still has plants coming through and was done a few days behind the above picture, so the two pictures are not that accurate comparison. Not really direct drilling, but there.

Was rung up by @Simon Chiles who said, talking about the maschioing, "What the hell did you think you were doing?!". This field might have been OK just with raking, but some of the others definitely wouldn't have been I think.

Our one field of cover crop was the wettest of all, and there was the odd bit the maschio missed. These bits look very ugly. The slot has completely baked out and there isn't much growing out of these bits. Also, the slugs seem to have been more active in these areas. All in all I'm glad we cultivated after drilling. Picture of exposed slot.

Spring barley stubble Terrastared twice. Claydon drilled at 185 kg/ha. Maschioed once the top had dried and then rolled. Drilled at the same time as the first picture. A bit too early for a photo, but there are a reasonable amount of plants there with some still coming. Still not as visually impressive as the 750a areas IMO.

Ploughed and pressed in the autumn. Maschioed and drilled at the same time as the Claydon drilled field. 190 kg/ha seed rate. Not direct drilling, but just to contextualise things.
