Thanks yes have tried this - the problem is that slug pressure is always so high in the rape (can't ever combine rape here at night as they will gum the grain pan in no time!) that the volunteers get eaten as soon as they germinate. That one area of volunteers is an anomaly. I though trying to drill a cover straight after the rape was worth a try but they decimated it too and I was reluctant to pellet at that stage.

Pumpkins drilled into the 6ft rye have done surprisingly well considering the drought left us with less than 50% germination. I think we would've been in a worse position if we had cultivated and drilled into dust.
The rye has gone down into a strawy layer, keeping the pumpkins dry. Few plants but several fruits each, and excellent size (we charge per pumpkin, not by weight, so generally the bigger the better to keep the punters happy, as long as they can lift them!)
Due to the weird year we didn't get any herbicides on, hence the fat hen/fumitory kicking about. The crop has received 3 fungicides and a dollop of N.
Opening in about 3 weeks so will be going through cutting off the stems in 10-15 days ish.

Your Mzuri looks like it’s sowing pairs of dual coulters together then a gap. What set up are you using? I’m used to seeing dual coulter gap, dual coulter gap etc.
