Disappointed by cattle hurdles

If you don't see it, you don't see it. You have made it clear that you just don't understand it. You've obviously not run a VAT registered business or sold [or bought] VATable goods to VAT registered businesses or you would know that they are not interested in the price including VAT and require a legal VAT invoice on goods they buy and supply a VAT invoice with goods they sell. You seem not to even have noticed or wondered why things are marked less VAT with the VAT applied separately on price tags.

A small hint… if I go buy a £40, 000 tractor, the price I will be quoted will be £40,000. Everyone knows that there will be £8000 of VAT added on top and even if on finance the VAT will be payable up front. Even if you are not registered for VAT you will have to pay the VAT, so your net payment will be £48,000. The same applies on a smaller scale, so you buy hurdles worth £400 from an ag merchant and you will be charged £480. If you don't make it clear that you are not VAT registered beforehand, the price quoted will be £400 because the merchant will assume that you will pay the VAT and reclaim it. For business to consumer sales the assumption is that you will not be VAT registered or that the goods will not be eligible for reclaiming the VAT, which is why non-trade outlets have price tags that include VAT. For business to business, which farmers merchants and dealers are, and they are VAT registered, it is assumed that you will know where you stand and quotes will invariably be +VAT. 99.9% of customers know this or, if they forget, accept that the VAT will inevitably be added. There's alway the one though.

As an aside, in the USA, prices are quoted before tax even in retail shops. Seldom is the sales tax quoted on consumer goods until it is run over the till.
They have told me they are making me some more to replace them. Will see what they are like if and when they arrive.
no problem with pressure fed welding hat
we have those but assume op would not or he would have made them himself

Knowing who the hurdles are from this is certainly not their normal standard. I do think they are the victims of their own pricing as they’re very busy at the moment I am expecting a sheep race from them in the next week or so having had some well priced sheep hurdles a few weeks ago.
I am in no way linked to the business or have anything to gain from this.

Fair comment; presumably your previous stuff was made well. But... no place should let rubbish like that pass out from its gate or be employing anyone who does work like that.

What will be your reaction if your next order is to the standard of the OP's order?

Having seen the welding on the other hurdles I don’t know if I should be disappointed or not with the Bateman ones on my handling race as half of them have the centre strut welded in al be it not fully and half of them are not I made them aware that some had been missed and had a very poor response ( in my opinion)

GoodO.

I had an issue a couple of years back with a race that had some poor welding and dreadful galvanising on it. THe first response was a tin of rattle paint which I declined. I asked for some advice and thoughts much as the OP has done here, and I pointed the maker at the thread on TFF, so no pressure... :)

Suffice to say I had it replaced, galv is showing [poor after 2 winters, but the rattle can they DID send me is used where needed.

The power of TFF I say... No threats, just a gentle pointing out!

I'd probably have an adult discussion with them and see what their resolution is.

It is assumed in ag circles, that all prices are subject to VAT, as most farms are VAT registered. However, you bought cheap cattle hurdles, and that is exactly what you have got. At this time they cannot be classed as unfit for purpose or anything else, they are just badly made. But what did you expect for £60.00, you get what you pay for, and if it's cheap you must factor that in to life expectancy and quality. As you have already said, it unlikely they will last, however that's life.

It looks to me that the poor welding is due to low heat, as the tubing is too short, full heat would simply melt the tubes as they are not a butt fit, or thick enough to stand it.
