Disastrous scanning what would you do?

You’ll weigh your options up. Here I’m culling anything that even so much as farts in the parlour, maiden heifers dragging there heals etc. Not make you feel any better but can’t be the worst time for a fertility blip

@Headless chicken do you milk record? If so, get the empties double checked on the milk test. As said above, scanning at this stage is unreliable. Also watch for heats, chalk/paint etc if needs be. I like to get two signs of being empty before I sell them, as in seeing regular bulling as well as a scan or milk test. Years ago, Dr Dick Esselmont did a study that showed that vets aren't all that accurate at PD's, he reckoned they made him an honoury vet to try and shut him up!

Been there ourselves with bad empty rates, not that high but high enough. And after going round in circles it came down to semen placement, no other excuse. We are DIY Ai so only had ourselves to blame. Got a good team together now doing good heat detection and more guys doing the Ai so less pressure on when it counts. 7800 litre autumn cows here did 7.5% empty after 11 weeks of mating, will have 30-40 December calvers available if any use to you, PM me if interested

Worst idea ever ,really make things harder than they already are
Why ?
Surely that depends on circumstance, labour etc.
come spring the cows are managed as if they are spring calvers so only real difference is the calving and rearing.it might even improve calf health as not so crowded in autumn/winter just when the calves are likely to suffer.
Its a risk here as grass growth can stall from May but to me it’s an option that shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.
Those spring calvers can then be managed out of the system if desired but under control rather than from a panicked reaction
It’s only one of the options and they should all be considered as sometimes the most unlikely looking one turns out to have merit.

My brother works on a split block calving herd ,and it’s masses more work than single block.start of 6 groups of animals ,take now for instance autumns on no cake for drying off ,springs on lots of cake as just over peak and still serving .small calves just out to grass and can’t really be mixed with autumn born calves which are 10 months old .his farm had 2 extra workers because of the work load compared to single block.Finding staff is hard.
Then fertility gets worse , because you can just let anything not getting in calf slip on a group and same with heifers slipping groups just adds to infertility
I’ve just gonna dry off cows what have run round the year because of a problem with them loosing there embryos and to be fair they milked very well until the last few weeks when they’ve dried themselves off
Separate the empties off and push cake into them and treat them as freshly calved
You can then disease check them and re scan them and figure out why there not in calf
You chuck a bull in with them now to spring calve without having a clue of what the issue was with them and have it happen again
Do you want to be buying in cows without knowing what the problem is ,what are you vaccinating for?? How have you built the herd ??
