Disc mower for JD2140

I have an old jd2140 2wd. I need to cut some rough grass and hopefully bale it. Ideally would like to mow and leave it in a row to bale. It’s on soft ground so nothing to big but ideally would like to run two mown widths into one and then round bale it. What sort of mower would be best? As you can tell I know v little about grass. The bales will most likely just get composted.

Bummer you have to remove it. There are very good reasons to remove it and there are very good reasons to just leave it. In any case, you should do what the boss tells you to do. A flail mower can still be used even if you plan on baling it. If you are looking for a tidy outcome, I would recommend a offset mower or a front mount mower. In general, the longer the cut stem length is, the bigger the baler you will need and possibly a bigger tractor. A flail, disc or drum mower would be three types of mowers I would consider for the job. Although a drum, might be too heavy for the 2140 when you consider the soft ground. How many times per year do you need to cut it? How big is the area? Will you be required to cut when the ground is in a soft state? If you leave tracks while doing the job, would that be ok?

Thanks for the reply. We will only need to cut the once a season. There’s only 30 acres to do at the moment. The tractor will have floatation tyres on which I appreciate will compromise the grass but we can’t leave tracks. Can you get a disc mower that cuts and drops the grass to one side?

To cut 30 acres it will be cheaper to pay a neighbour than buy one. Usually a mower is sold for a reason and it’s not because it was running great. One the size you’ll be looking for would have seen many birthdays. I’d consider a flail mower then you can use it as a topper another day if needed.

I would think a drum mower would leave tracks itself if the ground was soft when cutting. But soft is a relative term. You can certainly get a offset 2 - 3 meter disc or flail mower that will not leave tracks. However, the bailer and the tractor would leave tracks if the ground was real soft. Flotation tires will help on both the tractor and baler, but if you can push your thumb more than a 1" in the ground I would expect tracks to be left behind. The tracks should not be more than a couple of inches, but it will leave tracks. At least it would on my soft ground. Go for the driest part of the year to make that 1 cut. If the grass will be 1 meter tall at that point, I would recommend a flail because the baler that follows will have a easier job. I suppose getting a good mob of sheep for the job is also not allowed as part of this puzzle for a few weeks.
