Disc seeder build - Aussie style

Gday All,

We love seeing what other people are building and putting together so I thought I'd share one of our most recent builds for other like minded people and return the favour!

Background story;
We have been using a 3m disc box seeder for years, we needed to improve efficiency in this part of our business and what we found we required was,
- larger capacity seed and fert bins
- wider working width (without compromising access to clients farms etc)
- disc system that enabled us to change seeding depth quuckly and easily

What we did;
- found an 8m bar that had a few well worn disc units that we liked
- found another lot of secondhand disc units and rebuilt what we needed to give us 20x units on 8 and bit inch spacing
- took to the 8m bar with the grinders and welder to make a 4m bar
- purchased another Flexicoil aircart which is the exact same as what we use on our 10.5m tyne seeder
- a bit of paint and an airkit and we were off working.

We have had great results with this setup and are very pleased with our efforts. We have plenty more pics and vids of our gear working on Facebook and Instagram, checkout McGrath Contracting if you like!

Enjoy!

Looks like jd row units. If they are they can be re built in a variety of ways to suit soil types. Nice clean simple looking drill set up. Do you ever need extra weight on the frame.

Yes mate they are very similar to a JD unit, Excel (Excel are Aussie drill builders) these ones are branded but I'm pretty sure there are made by Ingersoll in south america.
No weight hasnt been a drama for any soil conditions we have encountered.

Looks a handy unit. My jd row units were worn pretty bad when I bought it so rebuilt all 68 of them with non original jd parts. Phil needham in Kentucky sells upgraded parts and can improve a jd drill a lot. Takes time and major effort to rebuild the but a big saving on crappy emergence or a new drill. If you get slop in the seed boot kits are available to fix them for small money. Any pictures of the job it’s doing.

Thanks Flatlander, we are running spoked depth wheels on nearly all the units now, we have a crate of spares already from Excel, we are going to re disc and boot every unit.
I totally agree with you how important it is to have minimal play in the boot to get a nice establishment.
Will try get some pics this arvo while driving around.
