Discounted price to Family???

My niece went to the gym last week, and as you do , you talk to people there and by pure coincidence and luck she found out that she was infact talking to one of her not too distant cousins.......again:rolleyes:
So that got me thinking, and thats not probably a good idea:banghead: , but....
Imagine two brothers, both involved in dairy farming, both in their early/mid 20's, the older brother gets a chance to rear some extra heifer calves which either at weaning or as yearlings can be sold in order help fund furthering his dairy operation. Now the younger brother would like to purchase said stock ,but wants to purchase them for a discounted price, mates rates, family discount, like at cost and for little or no recognition of the older brothers time and effort and...... wait for it, the younger brother "reason" for wanting said discount was he was short of money because ....(drum roll , please...) he was "chasing skirt on the other side of the world!!!"
So , what the feck do you do?:scratchhead: Sell them at a discounted price because he's family or words to the effect that your running a business and not a charity?

Tell him that if he wants cheap, quality stock - to raise them himself.

I get my calves from my inlaws. Pay full market value. They are good calves and they work damn hard to produce a good quality calf. why should they subsidise me.

glad yer not my brother ......:sneaky:
With my brother we normally ask a third party, discuss if necessary and provide invoice, never had any problems. (y)

Were these calves reared using land inputs etc all funded by main family farm? i have a sibling who was a vet who for many years got farm to rear rare breed cattle at no expense then pocketed all the cash and even had cheek to very regularly pop by and help themselves to full tankful of diesel out of farms diesel tank. Parasite, but permitted by my wonderful parents lol I say the brother should buy at market value and the other brother should pay farm the market rate for any land or sheds and inputs used otherwise it could build up into a bigger issue in years to come good luck

I spread fert a bit cheaper for my brother. We lend each other stuff regularly, help each other out for an hour occasionally, borrow stuff, that sort of thing.

My bill to him each season is always several thousand so I can’t do it for nothing, but I do a discount for him. Nobody else though. One price for all, and alls fair.

He never asks for discount and I ask for nothing in return really. It will all work itself out, no doubt.

It’s a bit of a poor do if you can’t help a lame dog over a stile now and then.
But if your brother is taking the pee, tell him to do one.

This is a constant conundrum, do you sell them cheap to him because he is your brother? Or does he pay you more because he is your brother?

I’ve a brother who’s a vet, get no discount from him whatsoever....

Never charge my family anything but they're not running a farm.

I don't live where I grew up but I do go back to the farms I work at to visit occasionally and have been roped into various vet tasks and money has never changed hands. They gave a lot of time to me when I was learning, this is payback.

Even our staff get substantial discounts.

If there is lots of profit in the job and it's mainly labour don't charge. ie if you help him fix his tractor and lend him tools, do it for free but something like selling calves I would charge full wack.
