Is there any nerds on here that would edit the video of the hole? I have tried but I don’t have the software to do it unless I spend some cash. I can email it to you

Wish I had the balls to excavate this. Previous owner started, but got cold feet in case the house fell down.:D
Looked like a spiral staircase leading down, apparently.

It might be a portal to China?
:)

Crack on, your house will be solid as can be now!

Maybe the Woodworm King lies beneath? :playful::nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

I had almost forgot this thread and I spoke to a friend who works for English Heritage (or Historic England or whatever they are called this week) He says they are mostly escape tunnels or "secret" entrances/exits for folk & goods, people have been building them for many centuries.
Of course, over time, the need for them diminishes and the use can change to culvert/wine store or they just get bricked up/back filed & forgotten rather than folk paying to remove them.
@7610 super q ..... cellar I would suggest for yours, bit to obvious for an escape route/priest hole unless it was re-used.

We have a similar 'entrance' on our patch, it leads to a large empty space below but it's a rainwater tank. There used to be a small cottage there and with no mains water here back in the day people round here walked half a mile to a well or harvested as much rainwater as they could. There are similar on neighbouring houses, right next to the house itself.
