Discovery 4 engines

Been dreaming of a new Land Rover discovery 4 (well not new but about 3 or 4 years old) but what I've noticed in the for sale ones is the amount with "new engine replaced under warranty"
Is this a common fault? What's wrong with them?

I was talking to someone about this a while ago. I think it is a problem with the crank bearings spinning and wrecking the crank. Some say it's caused because there are no tabs on the shells but others say it's due to momentary lack of oil because of acceptable oil consumption being rather high and therefore tabs wouldn't help anyway, can't remeber the oil use but it's really high and may cause the lack of oil.

Don't know if the replaced engines are any better.

I know a different issue but some of the 4s are cheaper tax the engine mind is an issue and as I have said before better to be born lucky than rich

These engines are slow to build oil pressure apparently when started up. Lots of cold starts wear the shell bearings - once they are worn they are more likely to spin.

In Modern Engines this should surely be a think of the past era ??
Using fully synthetic Oil in them as-well please tell this isn't meant to be happening?
Poor advert from LR but it doesn't surprise me

Id have said the 3litre D4 is more complicated as it has twin turbos for a start.

I've had four discovery 4's put best part of 750'000 miles on them. Never been let down or left stranded. Never had an engine blow. All I've had fixed is a faulty compressor on number 3
Great Vehicle tho aint they?
Still nothing like them from anywhere else in the world.
Come on ASIA can you not beat the Disco...
I cant justify having one but if i could id have one

We have had a few come into the garage as the turbos give alot of trouble varible vane turbos end up being eaten by them selves and go in the engine
Loads of suspension niggles and handbrake issues its a shame.
I love the cars really really nice but for the cost you have to pay for them and the cost of parts and the un reliability is just not acceptable iimo

It seems to be ! We have personal experience of the same TDV6 engine in a RRS lunching on its own internals and are also aware of several other catastrophic engine failures - resulting in bills not far off £10k in one case. Engine, turbo, ancillaries and fitting - plus body off in the Range Rover Sport to do the job.

There also appears to be a link with vehicles which have had their engines chipped or re-mapped! (Don't ask !!! And no not me !!!)

There have also been failures of the same engine in the Discovery 3&4 and Range Rover Sport and there are also many reported failures of the SDV6 in the full size Range Rover due to slippped bearings which have rotated. Loads of info on the FFRR and RRS Forums. The V8 Diesels seem to be trouble free - mine has been so far over 57k miles. And she uses no oil over oil changes based on the 15k intervals

Unfortunately it seems to be a common issue. Even the latest models around that I know of, and there aren't many, have had total engine failures. Metal in the oil and seizure. LR don't change the whole engine, but swap heads and turbos over, even while well inside warranty. They are seldom the same after that and who knows what damage has been done to heads and twin turbos long term. Short term they tend to leak fluids like sieves.

15K mile oil change intervals won't be kind on shell bearings and turbos......
No? I think you will find it quite average these days and that the oil has plenty of life left and that the engine failures have nothing to do with lack of lubricity or other lubrication issues other than either poor engine design or components or quality of construction.
I'm willing to bet that even if the oil was changed every 5000 miles, the same issue would arise.
